Emperor Tomato Ketchup is the fourth studio album by English-French rock band Stereolab. It was first released on 18 March 1996 in the United Kingdom by Duophonic Records and on 9 April 1996 in the United States by Elektra Records. The album takes its name from the 1971 Shuji Terayama-directed Japanese film Tomato Kecchappu Kôtei (Emperor Tomato Ketchup), whilst the artwork is inspired by the sleeve of a 1964 recording of composer Béla Bartók's Concerto for Orchestra.

Emperor Tomato Ketchup is the fourth studio album by English-French rock band Stereolab. Release date: 18 March 1996 (UK), 9 April 1996 (US). Label: Duophonic (UK), Elektra (US). Clear disc tray?: Yes. Metronomic Underground (F Minor). Cybele's Reverie (Main key: F Major, Accompanying keys: A Minor). Percolator (C Minor). Les Yper-Sound (B Major). Spark Plug (A Minor). The Noise of Carpet (G Major). Tomorrow Is Already Here (E Major).

Every aspect of Emperor Tomato Ketchup has Stereolab at their best, from experimental methods to lush production and down to the songwriting. It may not pay to be good at what you do as Stereolab was recently dropped from Elektra's roster but it can clearly be appreciated. Even by your Grandma.

Emperor Tomato Ketchup, however, marks a clear transition for the groop from a more abrasive droning sound to a more adventurous sound with moving melody lines and funky grooves. In this respect, it is a must have album for any fan, but many have opted to end their Stereolab collection here. If you've never heard a Stereolab album before, you're in for a real treat! Any of them will do, but this might be the best place to start.
