As Six Organs of Admittance, Ben Chasny has the curious ability to infuse his psych folk with styles from centuries past, creating something that feels as if it emerged from another dimension. As Six Organs of Admittance, Ben Chasny has the curious ability to infuse his psych folk with styles from centuries past, creating something that feels as if it emerged from another dimension. Luminous Night is decorated with plenty of these sounds, including the Renaissance-style flutes of Actaeon’s Fall (Against the Hounds), the trembling tablas of Bar-Nasha, and the shoegaze-like distortion hovering over Cover Your Wounds With the Sky.

Luminous Night doesn't challenge School of the Flower or The Sun Awakens for Six Organs' best albums, but it is a solid addition to a big catalog that gets more interesting all the time.

Six Organs of Admittance over the last couple of years has flavored its sound with various instrumentation whether it be percussion or other guitarists. On 'A Luminous Night' flute ('Actaeon's Fall') and tabla ('Bar-Nasha') make appearances. The variety of sounds really help diversify the record from Chasny's last few. Randall Dunn's hands on the production also positively mixes into Six Organs of Admittance's sound most obviously on 'The River of Heaven'.
The last record put out by Six Organs of Admittance, Shelter From the Ash, was an ominous, powerful, sprawling LP which took hold of the listener following repeated listens. It buffed up Ben Chasny's noise-folk style - too much for some people's liking. Pitchfork, in particular, smelt a rat: 'Here, Six Organs is doing for psychedelic folk what Jackson Browne and the Eagles did for pop-reared folk-rock,' wrote Grayson Currin, 'hybridizing polished, perfected takes on touchstones into a safe-for-anyone alloy. If that was polished, then eleventh album Luminous Night is a widescreen epic complete with surround sound. Inspired by Kurosawa soundtacks, it has an expansive cinematic feel, as Ben Chasny carries on the project started with the last. Following his retrospective RTZ compilation, Ben Chasny continued his 2009 work with Luminous Night, yet another in the string of compelling, moving releases under the Six Organs of Admittance name. It is almost too easy to describe it as simply "yet another Six Organs" album, given that Chasny's wide-ranging, continuously unstable artistic palette thrives on constant shifting between modes, whether talking simply about the arrangements of songs - or even their core melodies - or the shifting from stark solo performances to towering full-band arrangements.
