Nattens Madrigal: Aatte hymne til ulven i manden is something of a unique record, taking the aesthetics of Darkthrone's Transilvanian Hunger to its logical extreme, Nattens Madrigal: Aatte hymne til ulven i manden is quite possibly the rawest most abrasive Black Metal album of all time. The entire album is drenched in a layer of static, buzzing fog that completely cloaks the music and distorts everything underneath it. The production is nothing short of awful and it takes a large amount of perseverance for your ears to become accustomed to the sound

When ones ears finally adjust to the super raw production, one will be greeted to a highly melodic and atmospheric form of Black Metal that is full of excellent riffs and overall Black Metal excellence. Nattens Madrigal: Aatte hymne til ulven i manden has some incredible guitar playing and has some of the best riffs I've heard on a Black Metal album. They're very melodic and they're also played very fast, there's also a couple of quick solos strewn around as well.

Allegedly recorded in a forest, Ulver's third album is not the easiest listen. The production causes the vocals to be mixed lower than the guitars, the drums to be hard to pick out and the bass to be literally impossible to hear. With all of this in mind, Nattens Madrigal is very possibly the greatest black metal album ever recorded. It's rawness, for black metal fans is an added bonus, while for non black metal fans, is an annoyance. The album opens up with a raw tremolo picked riff. Just 30 seconds into the first track, we hear a raw and very speedy guitar solo . Nattens Madrigal is a concept album written about a man who immerses himself in 'evil spirits' and becomes a werewolf. Nattens Madrigal translates to 'Madrigal of the night' and the sound of the music would certainly reflect the title. Hymn VI, a major highlight of Nattens Madrigal is a surprise and a completely unique black metal track. The opening riff is incredibly happy and switches between furious black metal and the happy riff. Not only is it unique, but it is a brilliant song.
Nattens Madrigal (Madrigal of the Night) purports to be a concept album about wolves, the night, the moon, and the dark side of mankind, but it's difficult to tell, partly because the album was allegedly recorded outdoors in a forest. But even without the resulting sound quality, Ulver's music is so fast and ferocious and the vocals so garbled (and in Norwegian, at that) that it's best just to take the sheer sonic force as reflecting the band's concept, rather than trying to piece it all together.

Nattens madrigal returns Ulver completely to black metal. The biggest outstanding feature is the extreme rawness and low fidelity of the sound. Nevertheless, lo-fi quality and black metal can go hand in hand frequently, so it’s not anything too shocking. It’s still holds to the band’s fondness for Norwegian folklore and fantasy.
