Je tu il elle (Chantal Akerman) - . /10. Akerman’s characters communicate so much by saying so little. Few sex scenes in cinema are more honest or more private. There is no exposure of the emotions that undergird the eroticism – the full dimension of its meaning is for Julie and her lover alone to know. Given Akerman’s uninflected candor and dissociated photography, one might assume JE TU IL ELLE to be cryptic and impenetrable, devoid of entertainment. And yet, like the most self-assured experimental narrative filmmaking, Akerman’s breakthrough achievement practically pulsates with emotion, even if not explicitly rendered or aesthetically emboldened.
