Two master music makers - one from Mali in West Africa, the other from the United States - join together in a cross-cultural program that creates a musical dialogue between two traditions. Few Americans appreciate the deep ties between our string music traditions and those in West Africa. Pairing the American banjo and its ancestor, the Malian ngoni, Bob Carlin and Cheick Hamala Diabate make the connections palpably real, as well as sublimely musical. In 1995, Cheick Hamala Diabate migrated to the United States, where he continues performing within the Malian community for public and private celebrations.

The Grammy Award for Best World Music Album was first presented at the 34th Grammy Awards in 1992. The category remained unchanged until 2004, when it was split into separate awards for Best Traditional World Music Album and Best Contemporary World Music Album. The first award for Best Traditional World Music Album was presented to the Sherab Ling Monastery at the 46th Grammy Awards for the album Sacred Tibetan Chant. In 2011, a major overhaul of the Grammy categories resulted in the merge of the two awards to a single Best World Music Album category beginning in 2012. From Mali to America. Cheick Hamala Diabate. Label: 5-String Productdions. Albums tracing the genetic connections between American blues and Mali's griot music are hardly new at this point - but novelty isn't what makes an album succeed. Many believe the ngoni to be the ancestor of the banjo; this album reunites the long-lost cousins. The results are pretty great: Diabate's ngoni performs a powerful pas de deux with historian Bob Carlin's clawhammer banjo playing; the relationship develops with the delicacy of a mating ritual
From Mali to America. The traditional North American five-string banjo has its roots in African stringed instruments like Mali's ngoni, producing a similar sound and inviting the same techniques of strumming and picking. The diversity of musical styles that has developed around these instruments is a matter of complex cultural forces. feat: Cheikh Hamala Diabate & Bob Carlin.
