Viva Last Blues – Palace Music (1995). Arise Therefore – Palace Music (1996). Joya – Will Oldham (1997). I See a Darkness – Bonnie "Prince" Billy (1999) Oldham also featured as guest aesthetic designer for the North American literary magazine Zoetrope All Story (vol 11, no 1) in 2007. In a note contained in the issue, he jokes that it would be "really magnificent to imagine this issue as a cocktail party at which all of the contributors, word and image, are present.

The influence of Appalachian folk music is tremendously manifest in Viva Last Blues, Will Oldham's third album under the Palace moniker. But rather than simply copping the rustic mystique of early American music, he chose to recreate it on his own terms. Combining stark acoustic numbers with Neil Young-style rockers, Oldham managed to expand his sound significantly without sacrificing the character and intimacy of his early offerings. Producer Steve Albini leaves every instrument crisp and distinct, allowing Oldham's songs to shine through with no intrusive atmospherics. Perhaps that was because the album captures Brainiac at that momentous threshold between raw, nervous energy and cold calculation. 056: A Tribe Called Quest The Low-End Theory.

DISJOINTED, FRACTURED, SENSITIVE rootsy tunes with blues undercurrents sung and slung in Will Oldham's distinctive coming of age vocals. There are songs here about life, death, friends, family, religion, a stable home life and copulation with mountains. I get everything the Palace Bros. put out. Great in the morning, noon, or night. These guys can be found using three different monikers: Palace Brothers; Palace, and now Palace Music. The core of the band and all it's incarnations remain to be Will Oldham himself. Jason Loewenstein of Sebadoh fame plays drums on this record and sings backup. Cool.
