Paul Simon Graceland. Released October 5, 2012.

Graceland" is the title song of the album Graceland, released in 1986 by Paul Simon. The song features vocals by The Everly Brothers. The lyrics deal with the singer's thoughts during a road trip to Graceland after the failure of his marriage. Actress and author Carrie Fisher, Simon's ex-wife, said that the song referred in part to their relationship. The song won the 1988 Grammy Award for Record of the Year.

Graceland is Paul Simon’s seventh solo studio album and won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1987. Coming off the commercial disappointment of Hearts and Bones and the end of his marriage to actress Carrie Fisher, Simon became fascinated with the Afrikaans music of South Africa. Despite the cultural embargo placed on the nation at the time due to the apartheid, Simon recorded the album with several South African musicians, and toured with them in support of the album

Paul Simon started calling his song "Graceland" after he came up with the track, which reminded him of the Sun Records sound where Elvis recorded. Simon says this song is an example of "how a collaboration works even when you're not aware of it occurring. He traveled to South Africa in February 1985 and recorded with a variety of local musicians. One of these sessions was with an accordion player named Forere Motloheloa, who played on the song "The Boy in the Bubble. Simon describes that trip in the song; he drove to Graceland from Louisiana on Route 61, and the lyrics were his thoughts of the countryside: "The Mississippi Delta is shining like a national guitar. When he finally got to Graceland, he took the famous tour. This is the title track of Simon's most successful album, selling over 15 million copies and winning a Grammy for Album of the Year. It is an album focusing mostly on African music, but it also explores other forms of non-mainstream music, like Zydeco

As the 25th anniversary celebrations build for the groundbreaking album, Robin Denselow recalls the huge controversy it caused. It was a plush affair for the mid-80s, an era when record sales had already begun to decline, and when music writers had already begun to reminisce about the good old glory days when lavish promotional parties and international flights were commonplace. On 27 August 1986, the Warner label hosted a major event at the Mayfair Theatre in London to mark the release of Paul Simon's adventurous new album, Graceland. We were given lunch, listened to the new work, and.

With Graceland, Paul Simon hit on the idea of combining his always perceptive songwriting with the little-heard mbaqanga music of South Africa, creating a fascinating hybrid that re-enchanted his old audience and earned him a new one. It is true that the South African angle (including its controversial aspect during the apartheid days) was a powerful marketing tool and that the catchy music succeeded in presenting listeners with that magical combination: something they'd never heard before that nevertheless sounded familiar

The album brought Simon back to the spotlight, it stayed on the chart for a total 101 weeks and later won the 1987 Grammy Award for Album of the Year, while the title song won the 1988 Grammy Award for Record of the Year. Paul Simon is one of the most successful and respected songwriters of the second half of the 20th century. After reaching worldwide success as one half of Simon and Garfunkel, (where Simon wrote most of the pair’s songs, including three that reached No. 1 on the US singles charts: The Sound of Silence, Mrs Robinson, and Bridge Over Troubled Water )

Paul Simon‘s joyous, vibrant Graceland, released 30 years ago today, remains one of the most beloved albums in pop history. And also one the most controversial. Simon had ventured to South Africa to record the album with local musicians, ignoring an international boycott set in place by the United Nations Anti-Apartheid Committee. What gives the right to wear the cloak of morality? he railed at the time. The Graceland saga is a tale of black, white and a sprawling gray area. As the album turns 30, here is the story of its creation as told through 10 little-known facts. 1. Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels was the patron saint of Graceland. A wealth of underrepresented people and cultures contributed to the innovative music Simon made on his 1986 masterwork, but there’s one figure who seldom gets recognized for his role in the Graceland odyssey. Surprisingly, the album probably never would have happened without television titan Lorne Michaels
