The Chesterfield Kings. The Chesterfield Kings were a rock band from Rochester, New York, who began as a retro-1960s garage band, and who have heavily mined 1960s music, including some borrowing from the 1960s recordings of The Rolling Stones. Core members were former Distorted Level singer, underground music journalist and avid record collector Greg Prevost (founder of the band), and Andy Babiuk (16 years old at the time of joining the band); others have come and gone. The group's next album was an acoustic blues record Drunk On Muddy Water (1990). Their Let's Go Get Stoned (1994) is a mix of slightly post-Aftermath Stones covers and worthy originals in the Stones' style.

Fossils is a compilation album by indie rock band Dinosaur J. released in August 1991 on SST Records. It contains three 7" singles the band had previously released on SST, as well as three covers. All tracks written by J. Mascis except where noted. Lee Ranaldo – backing vocals on "Little Fury Things". Lou Barlow – bass, ukulele, vocals. J. Mascis – guitar, vocals.

Avoiding campy thematic retreats, The Chesterfield Kings will impress you with both their intense musical knowledge and their evasion of revivalism. The sound quality, like their early-'60s antecedents, is horribly monaural, but The Chesterfield Kings wanted that dirty, 1960s two-track atmosphere on this album. This is a record that both mimics and honors the time-lost tradition of abrasive and abrupt, underproduced rock & roll.

Without a doubt, shortly into America’s punk musical phase, The Chesterfield Kings revamped the garage rock psych sounds of the mid 60’s, infusing those vibes with their own special take, and with that in mind, many if not all of The Chesterfield Kings’ albums sound very much the same, though if one has followed the band, you know that they’ve. All of this leads me back to this album, perhaps the most significant defining honest moment in the life of The Chesterfield Kings, because as good as any of the other material may or may not be, Psychedelic Sunrise, inspired by others or not, is contextually the strongest most responsible set of songs they’ve ever managed to string together.
