Nurse With Wound has been Steven Stapleton’s main musical outlet for some 30 years. He has also appeared on records by other artists and worked as a producer, remixer and, more recently, a critcially acclaimed soundtrack composer. As well as his musical output Stapleton is a highly accomplished and renowned painter and sculptor often working under the guise of ‘Babs Santini’.

Complete your Nurse With Wound collection. Gyllensköld, Geijerstam and I at Rydberg's was, for a long time, a casualty of Steven Stapleton's remarkably scattershot approach to the Nurse With Wound catalogue. Never one to be overly precious about past albums - happily slotting in bonus tracks and new mixes seemingly on a whim - Gyllensköld only existed for a long time in a radically reduced remixed form (most notably the ten minute opener cut to less than three). In 2007, United Jnana finally released the record in its original form, with the remixes as additional tracks. I'm going to focus on the original version here.

I'm going to focus on the original version here.'Several Odd Moments Prior to Lunch' opens the record (whether this is an album or an EP remains open to discussion), and is the clearest evidence that David Tibet is now a fixture in Stapleton's life. Recorded around the same time, the track features a hefty chunk of vocals and choir samples from the earliest version of Current 93's 'Maldoror is Dead'. Tibet also provides spoken word throughout the track, alongside guest female speakers. The largely vocal piece is relatively static in comparison to earlier Nurse material, focusing instead on creating a very particular and unsettling atmosphere through the use of repeated motifs. As a brief reminder that this is indeed Nurse With Wound, and not Current 93, Stapleton undermines Tibet's closing declaration of "And then the wild beast showed its claws" with a couple of pig-like snorts. 'Phenomenon of Aquarium and Bearded Lady' loops uneasy woodwind samples throughout, piercing their hypnotic effect with piano stabs and thumb piano plucks. Much as with 'Mutilés De Guerre' from Insect and Individual Silence, the continual repetition of a fairly horrible musical motif throughout makes the piece both sinister and utterly hilarious.'Dirty Fingernails' is probably where the record's reputation for being a particularly cold and harsh record comes from, with sharp electronic tones being present throughout much of its runtime. All of NWW's releases to this point had been uncompromising and 'difficult' in nature, but 'Dirty Fingernails' is second only to the Whitehouse collaboration The 150 Murderous Passions in terms of physical discomfort: as grinding metal and atonal organ chords rise up to meet the perpetual screeching, the track verges on blood-pressure-raisingly stressful. The noisy outro features a brief snippet of the Crowley loop also used in C93's 'Maldoror is Dead'.The sound quality on Gyllensköld is superb, really highlighting Stapleton's increasing confidence in the studio. Recorded only a few months after Homotopy to Marie, the clarity in the mix and the general fine details in the arrangement are leaps and bounds ahead of even that album. Where it falls down, however, is in the overall effect. While the choice of more direct, focused tracks works well, the three pieces don't fit particularly well together, or feel like they inhabit the same sonic world. The occasional recycling of sounds - not only the C93 material, but also piano and cymbals which sound as if they are taken directly from Homotopy - also leave the first two tracks sounding ever so slightly like outtakes. On a technical level, Gyllensköld, Geijerstam and I at Rydberg's is a triumph; in terms of actual ideas, it is slightly underwhelming. Very much a transitional record that finds Stapleton building on what he'd learned on Homotopy and moving towards future projects, the record contains more than enough good material to satisfy existing Nurse With Wound fans, but is best left until after exploring Stapleton's wealth of exceptional albums.
