Aram Khachaturian's Piano Concerto in D-flat major, Op. 38, was composed in 1936. It was his first work to bring him recognition in the West, and it immediately entered the repertoire of many notable pianists. The Piano Concerto was the first of three concertos Khachaturian wrote for the individual members of a renowned Soviet piano trio that performed together from 1941 until 1963. The others were the Violin Concerto for David Oistrakh (1940) and the Cello Concerto for Sviatoslav Knushevitsky (1946).

Orchestra: Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra. Conductor: Loris Tjeknavorian. Composer: Aram Khachaturian. Audio CD (March 19, 1996). The two pieces for wind band are mere circus and swap-meet carousel affairs, whereas the Dance suite is very much typical of the composer - inspired by Armenian folk music, and containing a richness of tunes and colors, but unfortunately in this case without achieving anything memorable (although it is enjoyable enough one first time around). Tjeknavorian is, however, still an ideal champion, and overall this is a very recommendable release if not the first choice of the concerto. One person found this helpful.

Aram Khachaturian Piano Concerto - The greatest piano concerto you are unlikely ever to hear in a concert hall. ARAM KHACHATURIAN PIANO CONCERTO in D♭ major, Op 38 (1936). The Khachaturian piano concerto is a masterpiece of the concerto literature. I've loved it all my life but have never heard it performed in concert. It was composed for Lev Oborin, a member of a glorious piano trio of the Soviet era and is the work that made the composer famous in the west. Khachaturian also wrote concerti for David Oistrakh (in 1940) and Sviatoslav Knushevitsky (in 1946), the violinist and cellist of the celebrated trio. There are several excellent performances here.
