The Bravery's self-titled debut flourished in the new-wave niche carved out by the Killers, but on follow-up The Sun and The Moon, the band appears at a loss for a next move, jilted by a dance rock scene that's grown less and less forgiving with every soulless, four-on-the-floor wannabe anthem. Like it or not, a lot of today's mainstream rock acts are resurrecting the lost art of the concept album to surprising degrees of success. While old staples like Nine Inch Nails or Red Hot Chili Peppers spiced up their recent twilight albums with the respective themes of apocalypse and love-via-music, newer groups have embraced the concept album to the point of self-reinvention.

As annoying as Endicott's mascara-tainted bellyaching was on the Bravery's debut, his masses commandeer the group's stylistic direction on The Sun and the Moon, cheapening already trite regurgitations of Robert Smith confessionals by bloating them to anthemic proportions. An album that tries to be the next step from an act that is just a bad copy from the 80s new wave bands? The Bravery released an album that it feels mediocre. It´s a shame for Brendan O´Brien, but this is not his fault. The sin is over the band´s shoulders.
The year of the sophomore album (and the pig, incidentally) notches another entry with The Sun and the Moon, album number two by NYC quintet the Bravery. So far, the predominant theme for 2007 follow-ups has been a rejection of fun in favor of an attempt to appear more serious. Bloc Party's A Weekend in the City found them scoring so far off the charts on the Heartfelt & Earnest Scale that the record became tedious; Kaiser Chiefs cast aside their rousing nonsense syllables and tried on some thornier melodies, which left them looking more stubborn than creative
