Gilels had immense physical power and impeccable control, but he was also capable of exquisitely refined poetry and had an acute perception of the lyrical impulse lying behind even the most assertive of Brahms's writing. The orchestra, too, though not always immaculate, plays at fever pitch from the first bar to the last.

The Ballades, Op. 10, are lyrical piano pieces written by Johannes Brahms during his youth. They were dated 1854 and were dedicated to his friend Julius Otto Grimm. Their composition coincided with the beginning of the composer's lifelong affection for Clara Schumann, the wife of Robert Schumann, who was helping Brahms launch his career

Andante - Più adagio Johannes Brahms; Emil Gilels; Ottomar Borwitzky; Berliner Philharmoniker; Eugen Jochum. The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Eugen Jochum recorded this album dedicated to Brahms in the 1970s: the two concertos date back to 1972, recorded amid the warm acoustics of Berlin’s Jesus Christus Kirche, while the seven Fantasias are from a 1975 session in Finland. Late Russian pianist Emil Gilels joins the orchestra on this entire inspired programme which was included on its list of the 100 greatest recordings by Gramophone. 96 kHz, 24-bit PCM – DG Studio Masters. When Eugen Jochum was asked in an interview a year before his death about the finest recordings of his long and distinguished career, he singled out the Brahms concertos with Gilels for special mention. Considering that Jochum was only accompanying a soloist, it is hard to imagine a more eloquent tribute to the discs’ success.
