This 1967 date by tenor saxophone great Hank Mobley was a high watermark for the Blue Note label during that exceptional year. Mobley wrote all six tunes here, and they offer the breadth and depth of his mature compositional method. All but one of his collaborators on this project were label veterans - Jackie McLean, Blue Mitchell, Billy Higgins, and Bob Cranshaw. The lone exception was pianist John Hicks, and the recording session benefits greatly from his contribution.

Hi Voltage differs from several other better-known Mobley albums on Blue Note from this period in that it does not include a standard ballad such as Remember and If I Should Lose You (on Soul Station), Hello Young Lovers (on Another Workout), or Three Coins in the Fountain (on both Workout and Another Workout, and The More I See You (on Roll. Since adding Hi Voltage to my collection of Hank Mobley CDs, I have played it repeatedly.
