Thaye Dorje His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa. In the presence of Karmapa, Sangyumla, and venerable monks from various Karma Kagyu monasteries, Luding Khenchen Rinpoche led the ceremony for Thugsey, symbolizing his taking refuge in the Three Jewels: the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha. In accordance with tradition, Thugsey was also given a refuge name. With humble appreciation, Karmapa offered Luding Khenchen Rinpoche a mandala and a symbolic offering of body, speech and mind for the teacher’s longevity.

His Holiness the 17th Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje: The Karmapa is the spiritual head of the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. Karmapa was born in Lhasa in May 1983 and was given the name Tenzin Kyentse by his parents. His father is the third Mipham Rinpoche, an important lama of the Nyingma tradition. His mother, Dechen Wangmo, comes from a noble Tibetan family, which traces its roots back to the fabled King Ling Gesar.
