The Stabat Mater is a 13th-century Christian hymn to Mary, which portrays her suffering as Jesus Christ's mother during his crucifixion. Its author may be either the Franciscan friar Jacopone da Todi or Pope Innocent III. The title comes from its first line, "Stabat Mater dolorosa", which means "the sorrowful mother was standing". The hymn is sung at the liturgy on the memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows.

This stereo recording of Dvořák's Stabat Mater, with Václav Smetáček conducting the Czech Philharmonic and featuring a major cast of soloists, was last issued at the time of its making (1962) - and yet, its sonic brilliance and artistic accomplishment alike have detracted nothingfrom its potential as an unfailingly enriching contribution to Supraphon's collection of recordings of this treasure of Czech sacred. Stabat Mater (Op. 58, originally Op. 28, B. 71) for soloists, choir and orchestra is an extended sacred cantata by the Czech composer Antonín Dvořák based on the text of the Latin Stabat Mater sequence. The work was sketched in 1876 and completed in 1877. Dvořák began the composition of Stabat Mater in 1875, six month after the death of his daughter, Josefa, who was only two days old. He chose the work, unusually for him, without a commission.

It's not easy to tell from the physical album, and much less so in online media, that this is a historical recording, made by the Czech Philharmonic and Chorus under conductor Václav Talich in 1952; the accompanying symphonic poem The Water Goblin, Op. 107, comes from three years earlier.
