Callus is the third studio album by Gonjasufi (Sumach Ecks). The album was released by Warp on August 19, 2016. Former Cure guitarist Pearl Thompson is also heavily featured on the album.

Gonjasufi's Callus is an album that's disorienting at its catchiest, harrowing at its ugliest, and more than willing to run both of those modes at the same time. Featured Tracks: Play Track. Maniac Depressant - GonjasufiVia SoundCloud. Ever since A Sufi and a Killer sent his scarred wail out into a wider world, Gonjasufi’s future has seemed pretty open-ended. It’s harsh and raucous and even oppressive, despite the fact that it ventures only rarely (and briefly) into uptempo trad-aggro turf. And there’s more we than I in that confrontation. Gonjasufi’s lyrics feel more than ever like they’re sung in his characteristic wobbly, mutating wail because that piercing tone is the best way to reach out to people.

Arriving six years after his widely acclaimed debut A Sufi and a Killer and four years after mini-album M. Z. LE, Callus is the third studio album from eclectic, shamanic vocalist/producer Gonjasufi (Sumach Ecks). As with his previous releases, the album is a heady, incredibly trippy blend of psychedelic rock, dub echo, Afro-punk, and severely bugged-out hip-hop, spearheaded by his own unmistakable vocals. While his debut was entirely produced by the Gaslamp Killer, Mainframe, and Flying Lotus, his subsequent works have seen him drift away from the California beat scene

Gonjasufi - Callus Calluses form on parts of the body that are subjected to stress, labour or fracture. They're marks of experience and trauma, mounds of skin made thicker and harder to protect the softer flesh underneath. American artist Sumach Ecks is surely familiar with calluses, both physical and emotional, and his voice seems callused, too. It's a pained, weathered cry, the sound of a life of ups and downs. Before then, he was a rapper under his own name, but when he emerged on Flying Lotus's "Testament," he was reborn as Gonjasufi. After releasing a few EPs and being sampled by Jay-Z, Ecks returns six years later with a follow-up album. mini-LP, Callus is a self-produced record that makes A Sufi & A Killer feel dense in comparison

2. Maniac Depressant (Ft. Gonjasufi) Lyrics. 7. The Kill, Prints Of Sin Lyrics.

Callus delivers its overt message in a highly original, dark-instrumental style against noise and drone. Fuzz, heavy bass and electro synth are juxtaposed alongside Gonjasufi’s own impressive playing of guitar, drums and piano. Pearl Thomson, formerly of The Cure, also appears on tracks such as ‘The Kill’ helping to tie together some of Callus’s deliberate chaos. The Conspiracy’, ‘Last Nightmare’ and the opening to ‘Surfinity’ are the stuff of dystopian nightmares – you won’t forget their message easily. As well as being a record about America, this is also a record about Gonjasufi. The album is a chronicle of the pain and suffering Gonjasufi has experienced in his life individually and socially – and it’s a message that speaks loudly to America. It’s an album that needs the thick-skin its title connotes to listen – you won’t emerge from it feeling joyous, but you will emerge seeing a truth that will deeply unsettle.

Same issue with my copy purchased at local store. Really disappointing !
my brand new copy has noticeable and annoying surface noise, throughout the entire album, although it's perfect to the naked eye. big disappointment.i hypothesize it's due to purchasing from, to save a few bucks.. what's the latest thinking on amazon for vinyl? i won't buy another copy, but i suspect i wouldn't have this problem if i purchased from bleep or a better retailer like soundstagedirect. even without proof, i think i'll do that in the future. :(
Well, I got my copy from Norman Records and I've had exactly the same issue, pretty annoying to be honest!
Does anyone know how many pressings of callus are out there?
