The 1958 Lituya Bay earthquake occurred at July 9 at 22:15:58 with a moment magnitude of . and a maximum Mercalli intensity of XI (Extreme). The strike-slip earthquake took place on the Fairweather Fault and triggered a rockslide of 40 million cubic yards (30 million cubic meters and about 90 million tons) into the narrow inlet of Lituya Bay, Alaska.
And five years after the Lituya Bay megatsunami, in 1963, there was a landslide upstream of Vajont Dam in Italy, producing an 820 foot high (250 meter) surge. It was only half as high as the Lituya Bay surge, but when it overtopped the dam it inundated five villages, killing almost 2,000 people. Geologists have also identified multiple potential future megatsunami sites where unstable rock rests above deep bodies of water-on the slopes of volcanoes in Hawaii and the Canary Islands, and on craggy rock faces in British Columbia and Cape Verde Islands.
LITUYA BAY New Haven, Connecticut. LITUYA BAY. May 2017. Lituya bay, hedonist. Lituya bay, streiber. The new LP from Perth’s Erasers is utterly magnificent: stark, Kraftwerk-ian synths humming ominously against eerie, dead-eyed vocals. Bandcamp New & Notable Jun 23, 2019. For Being by Channelers. Gorgeous music that is almost impossibly still, For Being finds the meeting point between serenity and strangeness. Bandcamp New & Notable Jun 16, 2019. TEA SERVICE by Future Museums. Lituya Bay is an ice-scoured tidal inlet on the northeast shore of the Gulf of Alaska. It is about seven miles long (1. kilometers) and up to two miles wide (. kilometers). It has a maximum depth of about 720 feet (219 meters), but a sill of only 32 feet (. meters) in depth separates it from the Gulf of Alaska between La Chaussee Spit and Harbor Point. The Fairweather Fault trends across the northeast end of the Bay and is responsible for the T-shape of the bay. Glacial scour has exploited the weak zone along the fault to produce a long linear trough known as the Fairweather Trench.
