What If ‎(LP, Album). Temporary Residence Limited. This is an absolute beauty. Kind of reminds me of nothing else in my collection. You could argue that if you appreciate Nils Frahm & Ben Frost you may be somewhere to understanding if its something thats for you, or not as the case may be. Personally if I am in the right head space its a lovely record to 'chill out' to. Reply Notify me Helpful.

On What If, Hauschka looks ahead to a dystopian future, as if the album title functions as a question completed by his song titles: "My Kids Live on Mars," "Nature Fights Back" and "Trees Only Exist in Books. The dense weave of the music, with all its multicolored strands and rhythmic obsessions, represents a new path for the Düsseldorf-based musician, one that's more personal, yet opulent and immersive  . Clearly, What If proves that Hauschka is unafraid to rethink his sound world.

Hauschka has a new album on the way. What If is the Volker Bertelmann's eighth full-length. In addition to his usual prepared piano, Bertelmann used a Roland Jupiter 4 synth and an Eventide H3000 Haronizer for this record, which imagines where the world will be 30 years from now. He also programmed automated player pianos-AKA the speed at which they could play," according to the press release, "manipulating the resulting sounds, and building layers to emphasise a composition’s metre. What If follows 2014's Abandoned City, an album about deserted cities, and a particularly inspired period for the Düsseldorf-based artist that included writing music for contemporary dance performances, working with classical musicians and scoring films. Watch the video for "Familiar Things Disappear.

Salon Des Amateurs already proved that Hauschka can incorporate unexpected sounds and sources into his music seamlessly, but there's still something special about What If's vignettes of loss, frustration, and occasional whimsy. A subtle political undercurrent runs through tracks such as "I Can't Find Water," where the prepared piano scrabbles as a melody shimmers like a mirage just out of reach, or "Constant Growth Fails," where the player piano's frantic arpeggios evoke Philip Glass' Koyaanisqatsi score.

Of course, any conceptual thought behind an album is rendered fruitless if the music itself isn’t engaging. Thankfully, Hauschka’s method of composing has a lightness of touch that feels like the music has been plucked out of the ether, reflecting the composer’s emotions at that very moment.
