Cornerstone is the seventh track of Arctic Monkeys’ 2009 release Humbug, and the second single to be released from the album. The song has a straightforward narrative. The narrator visits several different pubs, and finds at each venue a woman who resembles the ex-lover he’s pining for. He approaches the women, but is repeatedly turned away when: I asked her if I could call her your name. In an interview with NME, songwriter Alex Turner cited Cornerstone as one of the songs he’s most happy with, saying: ‘Cornerstone’, mayb. t’s quite concise. I wrote ‘Cornerstone’ one morning, quite quickly. There’s something to be said for writing in the morning. At other points in the day you’re a bit more defensive.
British indie rock band Arctic Monkeys have released six studio albums, three extended plays (EPs) and twenty-three singles. Arctic Monkeys were formed in 2002 by guitarist and vocalist Alex Turner, guitarist Jamie Cook, bass guitarist Andy Nicholson and drummer and backing vocalist Matt Helders. After recording and independently distributing demos, the band released their debut EP, Five Minutes with Arctic Monkeys, on 30 May 2005.

Arctic Monkeys – Cornerstone Lyrics. from album: Humbug (2009). Thought I saw you in the battleship But it was only a look a like She was nothing but a vision trick Under the warning light She was close, close enough to be your ghost But my chances turned to toast When I asked her if I could call her your name. I thought I saw you in the rusty hook Huddled up in wicker chair I wandered up for a closer look And kissed who ever was sitting there.
