I've recently "rediscovered" Silver Convention. Fly Robin Fly" was all over the radio, and then "Get Up And Boogie" shortly afterward. It was just all about "The Sound" without any real group identity. Now, you can find just about anything you wanted to know about Silver Convention including some very entertaining, if not slightly campy and bizarre video clips, from their appearances on '70's TV shows. This "Best Of" compilation stands out for several reasons. It's quite comprehensive in that within it's 36 tracks it covers all the big and minor hits. It also contains a lot of the "filler" that appeared on their handful of albums, some good stuff and some not so good

It's 1978, and Midsong -- née Midland -- International is really feeling the pinch of the anti-disco backlash. Although Silver Convention had a hit that year -- "Spend the Night With Me," and not included here -- some in their corner must've known that the project surrounding the ever-amorphous trio was winding down. As one may easily tell from the Discogs listings, there had already been a number of Greatest Hits packages for Silver Convention throughout the world, and perhaps it seemed high time to get one out for the American market, before both the group and Midsong itself passed into history. The most attractive feature, naturally, of this package is the "never before released" -- not! -- long takes on "Fly Robin Fly" and "Get Up and Boogie" originally circulated on a D.J. 12" meant for the dance floor. Of course, all Silver Convention songs are simple cycles that repeat over and over, so the long mixes are just longer representations of these cycles, but it's a good thing so why wouldn't one want them? Problem is that the sound of these two tracks as heard here is surprisingly bad, like they're coming from a third-generation tape, or even a cassette. One wonders why Midsong didn't have access to elements that they had released just two years before, but the lack of resolution in these tracks is immediately apparent; when "Save Me" starts up it fairly jumps out of your speakers compared to what came before, though the rest of the album sounds as it should. The other two songs noted as "long version[s]" on the front cover are merely the album versions as previously issued. The effect of "The Best of Silver Convention" on this listener was to make me appreciate what a fine album "Get Up and Boogie" is, and indeed, right after this "Best of" was concluded I pulled the other one and gave that a spin. So while this 2-disc affair may be Silver Convention's domestic U.S. "Best of," you can still do better.
