Luke Gordon's Spacer project debuted ATLAS EARTH in 1996, and it still sounds futuristic today. A mix of downtempo jazz and dub, it meanders in fascinating directions, leading the string-laden "Agent Orange" into a soporific spoken word from Ian Simmonds. Fizzy Flesh" has a mysterious intro before moving into epic easy listening, like a trip to fairyland.

With albums ‘Atlas Earth’ and ‘Sensory Man’ under his belt, both of which were ground-breaking explorations into chilled electronica, jazz and live orchestration, and his epochal track ‘Contrazoom’ with soul siren Alison Goldfrapp, Luke was ready for a change. With this album, I wanted to move away from the extreme experimentation of ‘Sensory Man’, and head towards the dancefloor without losing any of the musicality". The epic dance floor beats of The Beamer herald a more mature, polished Spacer, which still appeals to the home listener

The strings return in "Smash Mod Filter" with a gurgling percussion, and "Vanishing Points" brings in a saxophone amid a jittery background. "Fizzy Flesh" has a mysterious intro before moving into epic easy listening, like a trip to fairyland. "It's A Nano World" and "Nine" bring things more upbeat, while "Dead on Arrival" lets you back down on a sonic cushion. The title track takes the album out on a spare note, bringing Simmonds' vocals back for a second round. A thoroughly intriguing experience.
