Herbert von Karajan and the Berliner Philharmoniker are many things, but they are not French. And while critics have complained that in these performances La Mer sounds like the North Sea, Daphnis et Chloé sounds like Siegfried und Brünnhilde, and Boléro sounds like a polka, it's simply not true. Naturally, they don't sound French: the lightness, elegance, and luminosity that are hallmarks of the French style are wholly wanting here.

Karajan: Beethoven Symphonies (1963) is a set of studio recordings made in 1961 and 1962 by the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Herbert von Karajan. It is the second of four cycles of Beethoven's nine symphonies that von Karajan conducted, and the first of three for the German record label Deutsche Grammophon. The complete set was first released in 1963 in Europe, and as a result the cycle of symphonies is now generally known as the 1963 cycle.

Herbert von Karajan (1908-89) defined the art of conducting for millions over the course of his long career. Since his death, the charismatic Austrian artist has continued to inspire countless music-lovers worldwide through his monumental legacy of recordings, whose depth and richness are now celebrated in the largest box set ever issued: Karajan – Complete Recordings on Deutsche Grammophon and Decca. Deutsche Grammophon released Karajan’s debut recording, the overture to Die Zauberflöte with the Berlin Staatskapelle, in 1939. Karajan became Principal Conductor of the Berliner Philharmoniker in 1955 and held the position for the rest of his life.
