Released on 10th July, 1964, the Beatles third album in less than eighteen months was timed to coincide with the cinema opening of their first movie. Of the album's 13 tracks seven were featured in the soundtrack of the film. It was also quite remarkable that for the first time on a Beatles album that all of the titles had been composed by John and Paul.
Beatles fans are always arguing over which one of the original 13 . Beatles albums was the group’s best work. The Beatles album A Hard Day’s Night was the The Beatles first record that consisted entirely of original songs. The first two Beatles albums Please Please Me and With The Beatles featured a mixture of songs written by the Beatles and well-known 1950’s and early 1960’s songs. The third song entitled Anna, on the Beatles first album was written by Arthur Alexander. It was followed by Chains, which was written by Carole King and Gerry Goiffin. Chains, was followed by Boys, which was composed by Wes Farrell and Luther Dixon. Wes Farrell would go on to compose many of The Partridge Family.
The album was recorded over nine non-consecutive days, between January and June 1964. In between the sporadic sessions The Beatles fulfilled their touring and filming commitments, with John Lennon and Paul McCartney writing some of their strongest songs to date. What's more, The Beatles refused to take the easy option and delve into their Cavern Club-era songbook, selecting some of the numerous cover versions in their repertoire to pad out the original compositions
In that context, the achievement of A Hard Day's Night is all the more astounding. Not only was the record the de facto soundtrack for their movie, not only was it filled with nothing but Lennon-McCartney originals, but it found the Beatles truly coming into their own as a band by performing a uniformly excellent set of songs. All of the disparate influences on their first two albums had coalesced into a bright, joyous, original sound filled with ringing guitars and irresistible melodies
