U-Roy's debut album features his wildly idiosyncratic rants atop a stack of reggae hits. His skewed lyrical sense adds some surreal fun to the tracks, whether he's expanding on the original lyrics or just making with exuberant nonsense (or doing both, as on "Tide Is High"). Bits of John Holt's original vocal lend a sweet contrast to U-Roy's boisterous rapping on "Wear You to the Ball. And there's plenty of good-natured humor, as he shouts, "Right on, brother!" back at the vocalists on "Rock Away. Version Galore U-Roy.

Versions galore, you can hear them by the score, I could give you some more for sure," U-Roy shouts out on the title track of Version Galore, and indeed he could and did, recording scores and scores of versions of classic Jamaican hits. This album gathers up a dozen of some of his earliest, all cut for Duke Reid at Treasure Isle studio between 1969 and 1970. Included is one of his chartbusters, a version of the Paragons' "Wear You to the Ball

Version Galore, You Can Hear Them By The Score", U-Roy exclaimed on Version Galore, and indeed you could. Every producer in town was now vying to record DJs, pillaging through their back catalogs for appropriate rhythms. In U-Roy's wake came a flood of young hopefuls, Dennis Alcapone, I- Roy, Big Youth, Scotty, Lizzy, U-Roy Junior, and many, many others. 1978 brought a new album, Jah Son of Africa, arguably U- Roy's best. Again, a deeply rootsy outing; with a superb supporting cast (this time the Gladiators were joined by Ken Boothe), the album showcased the DJ at his cultural height. It was to be his final album for Virgin. In 1991, the label released the Natty Rebel (Extra Version) album, which pulled tracks from both Natty Rebel and Jah Son of Africa, and also included the Live EP.
