Cello Concerto by György Ligeti Conductor: Matthias Pintscher Orchestra/Ensemble: Ensemble InterContemporain Period: Modern Written: 1966. onata for 2 Pianos and Percussion, Sz 110 by Béla Bartók Performer: Samuel Favre (Percussion), Dimitri Vassilakis (Piano), Sebastien Vichard (Piano), Gilles Durot (Percussion) Period: 20th Century Written: 1937; Budapest, Hungary. This album features two works by Béla Bartók, a leading composer of the early 20th-century, and three concertos by Romanian composer György Ligeti, one of the most important composers of the late 20th-century. Founded in 1976, Ensemble Intercontemporain is a Paris-based contemporary music ensemble of 31 soloists who are dedicated to music from the 20th and 21st centuries. Hidéki Nagano (piano), Pierre Strauch (cello), and Jeann e-Marie Conquer (violin) are all featured on this album.
The Ensemble Intercontemporain delivers in each case. The Ligeti’s atmospheric Cello Concerto emerges from silence, and the distinction between ensemble and soloist is suitably nonexistent. Matthias Pintscher, Music Director of the EI since 2012, is the conductor for all three, also recorded in 2014 at the Cite da la Musique in Paris.

This release features works of Béla Bartok & György Ligeti. This release features works of Béla Bartok & György Ligeti. In this disc of 20th-century Hungarian music, Bartók’s Contrasts lives up to its title, with tangy playing in the outer movements and a fittingly smoother approach in the central ‘Pihen˝o’ (Relaxation). The folk influence may also be heard in the more severe Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion, though the music has a greater abstract quality.
