Williams' fourth album, Volcanic Sunlight, was released on November 11, 2011. Williams showcased the album at London's Hoxton Bar Kitchen on January 26, 2011. Livemusic interviewed Williams on the evening and made a subsequent film, produced by artist Alex Templeton-Ward. When Williams was asked what the point of poetry was, he said: "I'm making this up, I have no idea but here we go.

Saul Williams is a name often praised by his peers in the industry as well as the devoted fanbase earned over his lengthy career. With a rich creative output including 3 full-length albums, mutiple EPs, films appearances and published books, his works have appealed to both alternative hip-hop fans and poetry aficionados alike. Yet, we are ushered into Volcanic Sunlight with a full 30 seconds of Williams' trademark spoken word lyricism - unaccompanied by any music. Perhaps this is by design to ease listeners into what is a large departure from past productions. However, this is short-lived as with the utterance of "close your eyes and count to one," a lone drumbeat inserts itself; it slowly evolves into a singable chorus with a full band rhythm carrying the upbeat energy which fills the majority of the album.

Volcanic Sunlight is musician, poet, and actor Saul Williams' fifth long-player. It was preceded by the single Explain My Heart and, on the album date (11-11-11), followed by a second one, "Patience. Those who enjoyed Williams' last effort, 2008's Trent Reznor-produced The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of Niggy Tardust (Niggy 2 is rumored to be in the offing), or any previous recording of his for that matter, might initially scratch their heads at the sounds - and material - on Volcanic Sunlight.

It's taken me a few years to really appreciate (or even like) this album. It's deceptively simple in composition but the emotional (spiritual?) depth goes beyond the political acumen of other more accessible releases. Strangely I'd thought originally this was a more commercial attempt on first listenings, perhaps because it's more personal and less confrontational but I think the complexity and introspective lyrics put it beyond that.
Vinyl? also came out on a ltd button album.
Yeah I got the playbutton album, somewhere in the stash
