From the Rick Colom Collection: Here is one of four instrumental sides issued in an album of Porgy And Bess selections (Victor SP-6) by trumpeter Charlie Spivak, voted by Downbeat Magazine readers as 1944’s Best Sweet Band. Recorded late in the year, this collection of Gershwin tunes was released in early 1945 in the Victor Showpiece album format which consisted of two 78rpms encased in an illustrated heavy paper gatefold type container, as opposed to the usual more sturdy ‘book’ type built to hold three or more discs.
It Ain't Necessarily So" is a popular song with music by George Gershwin and lyrics by Ira Gershwin. The song comes from the Gershwins' opera Porgy and Bess (1935) where it is sung by the character Sportin' Life, a drug dealer, who expresses his doubt about several statements in the Bible. The song's melody also functions as a theme for Sportin' Life's character. This song came under direct critique from composer Hall Johnson for depicting African Americans as unfaithful.
His sophisticated and elegant style graced the records of many of the biggest names in jazz, including Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. Wilson studied piano and violin at Tuskegee Institute. After working in the Speed Webb and Louis Armstrong bands, he joined Benny Carter's Chocolate Dandies in 1933. Theodore Shaw "Teddy" Wilson (born 1912-11-24 in Austin, Texas-died 1986-07-31 in New Britain, Connecticut) was a jazz pianist from the United States.

Pops sounds like he really savored each duet, and his trumpet work – not a whole lot of it, because this is not a trumpeter's opera – is characteristically good as gold.
