This is an excellent bootleg. It has a set integrating new (back then) Fat of The Land songs with the old signature songs of Music for The Jilted Generation (MFTJG), which works nicely. What makes a set like this stand out, compared to recent shows after the release of the album Invaders Must Die - which show a similar feel of old and new (obviously broadened with the latest albums, which someone might prefer), after years of disappointing combinations around the release of Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned - are the interludes and additions of lesser known parts of the albums Experience and MFTJG, with Extasy Of Violence (Rock And Roll) as a rare but satisfying addition. Liam Howlett uses bits and sounds of Break and Enter (MFTJG) between songs, integrates the intro of Weather Experience (Experience) as an interlude to Their Law, and Skylined (second part of The Narcotic Suite on MFTJG) with Maxim's vocals, is impressive on its own live, all adding a balanced feel, creating an excellent festival gig. Maxim's mc'ing, as always, can be on the edge of deepening/brutalising the groove of the songs but together with his attitude, very much a crowd pleasing element (his attitude heard best during No Good at the end, bringing audience-members on stage, and reaching out to the whole crowd and festival at the end of the song). Keith Flint performs his parts of Breathe and Firestarter; punk would be the right word!A note, deserving emphasis at the end: the sound quality of this bootleg is top notch. I had a tape of this soon after the gig, through a contact at the broadcasting company VPRO responsible for the recording; believe me that the technicians they hired were very good at this, for decades already, yearly broadcasting the Pinkpop festival. It's an heritage of the previously state-funded "Nederlands Omroepproduktie Bedrijf (NOB)", which in the '80 was one of the biggest and most experimental audiovisual production facilities providers in Europe, and which will be completely (and sadly, in this case) privatized as from january 2011. Listen to this romantically!
