Spiral Scratch is an EP and the debut release by English punk rock band Buzzcocks. It was released on 29 January 1977. It is one of the earliest releases by a British punk band (preceded by The Damned's "New Rose" in October 1976, and both the Sex Pistols' "Anarchy in the . and the first two singles by The Vibrators in November 1976).
Spiral Scratch's hand-pressed, blurry black-and-white sleeve housed four tracks - each one a uniquely compelling experience, marrying raw, youthful zest with belligerent intelligence. The EP's release achieved several things at once. It opened up the independent scene, making . labels the natural springboard for aspiring musicians.
Spiral Scratch-the four-song debut EP on which Boredom appeared-was a revelation. British punk rock was brand new at that point: when Spiral Scratch was released on January 29, 1977, the Sex Pistols’ Anarchy in the . was barely two months old, the Damned, the Vibrators, and the Stranglers had some singles out, and that was it. All those bands were signed to itimate record labels. By the time they stopped re-pressing the EP in the summer of 1977, Buzzcocks had sold 16,000 copies of it. In its way, Spiral Scratch was at least as important to punk as the Sex Pistols’ rise, because it was the first record of its kind to erase the axioms that the art and business of pop music were necessarily separate, and that a band could never be important until it signed to a real record label. Buzzcocks said fuck it and decided to just do it themselves.
Listen free to Buzzcocks – Spiral Scratch (Breakdown, Time's Up and more). Spiral Scratch is a four-track EP by the British punk rock band Buzzcocks, recorded in 1976 and released in January 1977. It was the first punk record to be self-released (that is, without the support of a record label), and only the third ever by a British punk band. When reissued in 1979, it reached number 31 in the UK Singles Chart. It is often said that the many small DIY labels that sprang up across the country in 1977 took Spiral Scratch as their inspiration

Buzzcocks’ first line-up split before they could record an album (Buzzcocks II became Top Of The Pops regulars, Devoto formed the equally influential Magazine), but they recorded the first truly independent 45, the Spiral Scratch EP, and a series of demos, some of which would be polished to a silver sheen on the superb Another Music In A Different Kitchen. Time’s Up remains a largely very good collection.
Overall, Spiral Scratch is a great early punk EP, displaying the talent of a pioneering pop-punk band in their earliest stages. While it may be simple in its delivery, it’s effective, focusing on the strength of the group’s energy while cutting out any unnecessary filler, in line with traditional punk ethos.
