Isla is the second studio album by Portico Quartet, released in 2009. Isla is Portico Quartet’s second studio album and the follow-up to Knee-Deep in the North Sea, their Mercury Prize-nominated debut album. The album saw a continuation and refinement of the live acoustic sound developed in Knee-Deep in the North Sea. While those songs were written busking, the songs for Isla were written over a period of four winter months in the band’s garden shed.

Now rebooted as Portico Quartet after a brief spell as the three-piece Portico, the group are set to release their fourth studio album Art In The Age Of Automation this August on Manchester’s forward thinking indy jazz and electronica label Gondwana Records. It’s an eagerly anticipated return, with the band teasing both a return to their mesmeric signature sound and fresh new sonic departures in their new music.

The form of the ball becomes a shape that is circular. This shape is expressed in 2 D while the form is expressed in 3D only. Shape is a concept that can be explained using lines only. On the other hand, form being 3D requires much more than just lines to be explained. To demonstrate the difference between shape and form one can draw a circle on a piece of cardboard and then cut it along the circumference. Now a real ball can be made to pass through this cut shape, to show that the form is the real ball while shape is what one sees on the piece of cardboard. In daily life, we talk about a bell shaped flower or a circular headphone, implying how our mind tries to correlate objects in real life with our understanding of shapes that have been taught to us in art classes

Portico Quartet's former percussionist talks to Tom Lamont about his first solo album, why he left the band, and the influence of Chuck Berry. Defining decisions can be made in mundane places. Nick Mulvey was on a motorway in Germany, somewhere between tour stops in Karlsruhe and Bad Bergzabern and Würzburg, when he decided to leave his Mercury-nominated band, Portico Quartet. We were in a service station," says Mulvey. The others were eagerly talking about Portico's third album, what they wanted to do with it. I felt like my silence was becoming electric
