Shoulder To Shoulder. Label: Ministry Of Power ‎– MOP I. Format: Vinyl, LP, Album. It's interesting that this is the only Test Dept. material that has never been reissued anywhere. Probably, because it was originally created to support the miners and their families during the famous strike, so making money out of it with a reissue would be incoherent with the band's attitude, even after all these years. and the South Wales Striking Miners Choir, recorded in support of the UK miners' strike of 1984-1985.

The album Shoulder To Shoulder released in 1985 together with the South Wales Striking Miners Choir remains one of the ultimate productions featuring the ‘political and social’ engagement of the band. To fully understand the early years of Test Dept. I recommend the DVD released in 2016 by Cold Spring Records From The Vaults: The Sound Of Progress. released several productions, which entered into history.

Shoulder To Shoulder (Ministry of Power, 1985). Although the tradition of male voice choirs in Welsh mines goes way back to the end of the 19th century, they were perhaps never as powerful as when they sang in solidarity against Thatcher to release Shoulder To Shoulder to raise money for striking miners and their families. There’s a real end of days quality to this, first introduced to us by JD Twitch on his brilliant mix earlier this year.

Shoulder to Shoulder (Some Bizarre) by South Wales Striking Miners' Choir/Test Dept. Half this album is noise, the other half beautiful choir singing. Hari-Krishna (Navras) by Hariprasad Chaurasia. In India, I listened over and over to a record by Ravi Shankar and Ali Akhbar Khan recorded live in 1972 for the Apple label.

It's interesting that this is the only Test Dept. material that has never been reissued anywhere. Probably, because it was originally created to support the miners and their families during the famous strike, so making money out of it with a reissue would be incoherent with the band's attitude, even after all these years. Truly admirable.

Actually, it was very nearly reissued in 2015 to mark the 30th anniversary but that didn't happen due to some complex technical reasons. Maybe in 2025!
