Released July 29, 1977. Game, Dames and Guitar Thangs Tracklist. 1. California Dreamin Lyrics. Though original vinyls of the album are quite rare, P-Funk diehards hold the album in very high regard. On tracks like California Dreamin and Lampoc Boogie, Hazel mixes sweet Southern-California rock with his own brand of mangled, psychedelic soul. In 2004, Rhino Records re-released the album on CD and included four bonus tracks that were previously impossible to find. Game, Dames and Guitar Thangs Q&A.
Album · 1977 · 7 Songs. That only P-Funk obsessives know the six-string brilliance of Eddie Hazel is a tragedy of pop music. Game, Dames and Guitar Thangs, Hazel's only solo album, is catnip for any fan of propulsive, tightly compressed black rock. Hazel-P-Funk's lead guitarist and George Clinton's songwriting foil for most of the band's early years-is a deft interpreter, here redefining The Beatles' "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" and The Mamas & The Papas' "California Dreamin’" as slow-simmering soul jams, punctuated by his righteous solos
Some copies include a pink WB 'Promotional Copy Not For Sale' sticker on front sleeve.
Game,Dames, & Guitar Thangs is a work of a master Guitar player. Mr. Hazel dosen't have a large body of music, but what he made was perfect. I have the album, so now I have the CD. George Clinton had a way of finding the "One. Excellent guitar playing by Eddie Hazel in his first solo album. Includes sublime covers of California Dreamin' and I Want You (She's So Heavy). Worth a listen if you are an early 1970's Funkadelic or Childish Gambino fan.
In 1977, Hazel recorded a "solo" album, Game, Dames and Guitar Thangs, with support from other members of c, including vocals from the Brides of Funkenstein. He was completely absent from One Nation Under a Groove (1978), Funkadelic's most commercially successful album.
The album was released on July 29th, 1977. It was Hazel's only album until his death in 1992, when it was followed by several posthumous releases. Three songs on the album are covers, "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" (originally recorded by The Beatles), "California Dreamin'" (first recorded by The Mamas & the Papas), and "Physical Love" (originally recorded by Bootsy's Rubber Band). As bonus tracks, the Rhino CD included the four songs that made up the hard-to-find Jams From The Heart EP (1994).
For many years, Eddie Hazel's Game, Dames and Guitar Thangs was a holy grail of sorts for real funkateers, as it was the only thing released under Hazel's name while he was still alive, and it had been out of print for years. Truth be told, the album itself is a bit light. Barely over 30 minutes long, about half of the album consists of two covers (and a reprise), and the other tracks are little more than slightly fleshed-out jam sessions. But what the album lacks in songwriting and original material, Hazel more than makes up for with his guitar playing
