This, folks, is why you should not attempt to be a pop star, especially if you are an avant-garde genius like Beefheart. The compositions on here are absolutely unimaginative, lackluster, and downright Sad! compared to what you get on Trout Mask Replica, Lick My Decals Off, etc. Lazy Music is right. Beefheart himself encouraged people to take this album and Bluejeans and Moonbeams back to the record store for a refund, though B&M is the better of the two albums because it has Observatory Crest on it. Unconditionally Guaranteed, the universally derided album from Captain Beefheart and The Magic Band is commonly regarded as the nadir of the Captain’s career, the pariah among the pearls. When Unconditionally Guaranteed made its appearance in 1974, things had changed. This was a very different Captain- gone was the cunning word play and rich visual imagery. Gone were the tunes with sharp corners which gave you a quick jab in the ribs just as soon as you thought you had settled into them.

The Captain clutching dollar bills on the cover of Unconditionally Guaranteed offers a not-so-subtle clue as to what happened. See, being an avant-garde musician doesn’t exactly pay the bills, and while Vliet hoarded most of his band’s earnings for himself, his bandmates lived in literal poverty, relying on food stamps, and donations from family members.

The most reviled album of Captain Beefheart's entire career, 1974's ironically titled Unconditionally Guaranteed unfortunately largely deserves its negative reputation. as the first album of Captain Beefheart's contract with Virgin Records, it's also the last album that features any members of the Trout Mask Replica-era band, notably guitarists Zoot Horn Rollo and Alex St. Clair, plus former Mothers of Invention percussionist Art Tripp.

Upon release it was criticised for being too commercial; even so, it failed to give Beefheart any real chart success, peaking at on the Billboard Top 200. Contents. The album's lackluster and unchallenging music was the last straw. Drummer Art Tripp recalled, "When the band finally got our album copies, we were horrified. As we listened, it was as though each song was worse than the one which preceded i. After his contract with Mercury Records ended at the end of 1974, Beefheart disowned the record along with its successor Bluejeans & Moonbeams Track listing.
