Li’l Richard Towalski was born in 1942 in Chicago, Illinois. When he was four years old, grandma began taking him to picnics at Caldwell Woods. At age ten, he formed a polka band and started his musical career playing in local clubs, at carnivals, wedding and anniversary parties. All the while, grandma helped him with the Polish lyrics. At age eighteen, he made his first LP album on Chicago Polkas. His radio career began at age fifteen with a polka show on WOPA in Oak Park, Illinois. Both careers as a musician and DJ were interrupted by Uncle Sam who called him for a hitch in the Army. In May of 1970 his band was selected as the first polka band to perform on the campus of Notre Dame University in Indiana.

For example, the polka band Toledo Polka Motion includes a cover of the Beatles' "I'm a Loser" along with traditional pieces such as "Pod Krakowem" on one of their albums. Both were highly influenced by the style of Li'l Wally Jagiello, a polka performer of an earlier generation. Another influential early pioneer of Chicago-style polkas was Marion Lush who has been called the "Golden Voice" of polkas due to his distinctive vocal stylings. In their book Polka Happiness, Charles and Angeliki Keil describe the aspects of these "polka parties" that allow them to bring joy to people of all ages. A wide variety of people are accepted and people are encouraged to dance with many different partners. The musicians dance as well as perform.

Walter "Li'l Wally" Jagiello AKA Władysław Jagiełło, Mały Władziu and Mały Władzio (August 1, 1930 – August 17, 2006) was an American polka musician and songwriter from Chicago, Illinois. A self-taught Chemnitzer concertina and drum player, who sang Polish as well as English in many of his songs. His most famous compositions include "Puka Jasiu (Johnny's Knocking)" and "I Wish I Was Single Again"
