Pleased to Meet Me was released July 7, 1987. It was The Replacements' fifth album and the second one they recorded after being pulled up to the big leagues to partner with juggernaut Sire, Warner Brothers. It was also their first and only record made as a trio. Difficult circumstances certainly surrounded The Replacements during the creation of Pleased to Meet Me; certainly some of the inspiration for the songs on this record can be attributed to that situation. But the in the face of those challenges, the band persevered and somehow managed to make the finest album of their career. so far. Related Stories. The Replacements make a triumphant return at Riot Fest in Toronto Like a decades-old bottle of champagne finally uncorked, The Replacements' Riot Fest; set had a celebratory, infectious, and downright giddy spirit to it.
Pleased to Meet Me could be heard as an overcompensation for Tim's failings. The Replacements' influence on the alt-rock explosion of the 90s has been overstated, but their approach has continued to resonate in smaller scenes, where you feel like you're experiencing music up close, less mediated by rock star iconography. Their songs touch on some heavy shit, the kind of feelings best expressed in a more intimate space, but there's also plenty of room in there for some laughs.
What an album it is. A great, big, loud, rock 'n roll album full of delicious pop hooks and raging guitars. It would be the album that saved rock 'n roll years before rock 'n roll was saved by some bands from Seattle. If only the radio wasn't ruled by crap like Bon Jovi and Def Whatever at the time The Replacements would have been king. Instead they peaked at on the charts and we had to put up with Matt Wallace produced crap from the band on their next album as they attempted to crack the mainstream
The Replacements end the band's first era in 1987 with one of their best albums, 'Pleased to Meet M. . The period leading up to the recording of the Replacements' 1987 classic Pleased to Meet Me was a tumultuous one, even for a group quite accustomed to causing tumult. The band fired longtime "fifth Replacement" Peter Jesperson, which would have, on its own, been jarring enough. But then they let go the beloved but unpredictable guitarist Bob Stinson, which raised the level of turbulence both within the band and between it and its fans.
