Opiate is still a hard rock album, but it comes surprisingly close to metal, especially for Tool’s standards. First of all, this album is not that difficult to obtain. I have seen it in just about all the major cd shops, and is a hell of a lot easier to get than Salival. The first thing to grab your attention is the front cover.

They’ve pretty much said what they needed to say, whatever that was (uh. umanity deserves to be eradicated? gotcha, thanks!). This is just my opinion, of course, but Maynard seems pretty happy to just hang out in Arizona and make wine. Maybe I’m just a nostalgic type of guy that can’t accept change or progress, but I really do think Tool was a better band back then. And by better, I mean weirder.

According to Tool drummer Danny Carey in Revolver Magazine Presents Tool, "A lot of the songs for Undertow were already written when we did Opiate, but we felt like no one would take us seriously unless we recorded only our most aggressive, in-your-face song and put them out there at one time. And I think that got us typecast as a metal band. It's kind of funny, because the song I thought was the least aggressive, 'Opiate,' was the more popular on the record.
