Etienne Jaumet, the Frenchman of heralded electronic duo Zombie Zombie and various other productions, somehow convinced Detroit legend Carl Craig to mix his entire new album Night Music-that somehow being Jaumet’s intricately crafted and deceptively minimal epics of repetitive vintage synths and electrics that probably subconsciously appealed to Craig’s inner nerd (that inner nerd is still a million times cooler. Entropy, the first song released from Night Music, is the opposite of its title: tightly wound and seemingly infinitely that way until it suddenly ends

Historical reference points for the album, sonically and structurally, include early Detroit techno, the "kosmische musik" of Manuel Göttsching and Klaus Schulze, and perhaps, on a more fundamental, conceptual level, the minimalism of Steve Reich - of course, these are seminal and inevitable touchstones for all electronic music, certainly including the entire minimal techno wave of the 2000s and especially the. late-decade revival of cosmic (neo-)disco and the like

Even as that track delivers some late night easy listening jazz sax into the mix, it takes that line and transforms it into a buzzing synth, adding a certain frisson. You can hear Carl Craig's hand at work here: the smoothness, the Detroitian shimmer. Indeed, "Entropy" has a sleek, futuristic feel that wouldn't be out of place on a Planet E record

Jaumet's debut album throbs, groans, and wails with the pants-wetting and sleep-disrupting sonorities of all your horror faves. An occasional cop to placidity and prettiness aside- the folkie picking that closes his 20-minute opening opus "For Falling Asleep" offers a little light- this is one creepy album. Even the song titles- "Mental Vortex", "Through the Strata"- read like placeholders handed to a composer for the scenes when a possessed Christopher Lee starts spooking English schoolchildren. And it seems like no coincidence that Jaumet got his start.

Etienne Jaumet finds something a little more unsettling in the darkness, and his evocation of nighttime feels like a countervailing interpretation, all dire noises and eerily twisted shadows. Late of the profoundly silly Zombie Zombie, the French t creates a sure and solid rhythm on his first solo album. Night Music opens with For Falling Asleep, which sounds like it’s meant for anything but falling asleep; it’s a 20-minute nightmare that variegates from soothing to creepily unhinged, with an emphasis on the latter

Night Music is the name of Jaumet's debut album, and we're promised plenty of "loops and hypnotism" across its five track duration. Apparently heavily inspired by the work of avant-minimalist Steve Reich, the record will also feature none other than Carl Craig on production duties. As Jaumet's friend Ivan Smagghe explains in the press release: "It may look like the ultimate safe bet, Carl Craig being one of the very few unshakable pillars in modern electronic music making, but Carl did a lot more than simply mix the album
