Meshuggah (/məˈʃʊɡə/) is a Swedish extreme metal band from Umeå, formed in 1987. Meshuggah's line-up consists of founding members vocalist Jens Kidman and lead guitarist Fredrik Thordendal, drummer Tomas Haake, who joined in 1990, rhythm guitarist Mårten Hagström, who joined in 1993 and bassist Dick Lövgren since 2004.

This was my first Meshuggah album. I actually got it a month or so after it came out when I unintentionally got caught in the middle of all the hype that was going on about this record. Most of the people that I’ve talked to have said that ObZen is Meshuggah’s best album; which is a statement that I fully agree with. Meshuggah's 2008 LP "ObZen" points the band's musical direction more towards a nu metal kind of aggressiveness and heaviness than they are previously known for. Excluding the mid-range screaming vocals, the proof is in the writing and playing styles of no less than five of the nine tracks. These songs exhibit a power that smashes your senses like a hammer.

The end product was well worth the time and effort, however, as anyone who has ever banged their head to the polyrhythmic perfection of tracks like "Bleed," "Pineal Gland Optics" and "Dancers to a Discordant System" can attest.

Eke the album name, ObZen.

Lyrics By. Tomas Haake. Music By. Tomas Haake, Fredrik Thordendal, Mårten Hagström.

obZen is the sixth album by Swedish metal band Meshuggah. It was released in Europe on March 7, 2008, and in North America on March 11, 2008, through Nuclear Blast. Tomas Haake made his return as the studio drummer for the record after the Drumkit from Hell drum software was used on Catch Thirtythree. The release of the album was followed by their first world tour. In an interview with Revolver, Haake stated that obZen would be a collective return to the band's past works, signalling a shift in direction away from their previous effort, Catch Thirtythree.

ObZen is a music studio album recording by MESHUGGAH (Tech/Extreme Prog Metal/Progressive Rock) released in 2008 on cd, lp, vinyl and/or cassette. ObZen (Brown Double Gatefold Vinyl Re-Release) Nuclear Blast 2019.

'Mastered-for-vinyl-audio' apparently means stripping out the low end. How disappointing.

Excellent press. Pitty there´s not lyrics sheet, but anyway - recommendation.
MisterMax
Yeah... a bummer indeed. I sold my copy a few years back now, for basically my top 10 albums of all time, if not top 5. What a shitty sounding pressing this was. What a bummer. Case and point, the price kind of dictates the want for this press.... bummer indeed. What a fucking incredible mind blowing album, pressed so badly... sounds like it was pressed from mp3's.
Usishele
If you're still looking, Nuclear Blast announced a remaster/repressing a few weeks ago. It should be out around the end of March.
Walan
Heard some complaints about this pressing but mine sounds really great. One of my favorite metal album ever. Insane from a to z, you gotta listen to it to believe it...
Otrytrerl
Hey sellers. That album that was sold for 225$ , it was because it was signed by the band. No one will buy it off you for the same price in VG+ condition.. Go to the selling history before getting crazy on prices.
Briciraz
"6 For Sale from CA$243.33"Yikes, we got some overvaluations going on again...I mean it's worth a pretty penny but not that much.

If you're seeking obzen on vinyl, get this (red MB) version. It sounds magnificent. Ive heard nothing but negative about the grey UK version.

And given the themes of the record, the red pressing is the most appropriate! Glad I got mine. It looks and sounds wonderful.
Gavinrage
I think you need to have another listen. Until then, you can't sit with us.
Dobpota
I have this red version and it's definitely a step up from the CD to my ears.
Lavivan
both sound crap to me, I had them both when released and their sound quality is bullshit
Umsida
I may just have gotten a shitty pressing but the sound is horrible. There's absolutley no detail at all in intense areas. What a letdown for such an awesome album. Will try to get the NB release as well to compare.
Landaron
Just got the NB red vinyl and it sounds much better. Avoid this one.
Ynap
While I can agree with Danso on most of the review, I differ in a few areas. The pure sound on this album is overwhelming. That alone is why the record is amazing. Casually listening, you can say this sounds merely like and extension of "Catch Thirty-Three". The two major differences are the presence of Tomas Haake behind his drum kit and the concise song structure and flow of songs. The critical difference is the loss of programmed drum feel. Haake provides the human feel in a record that musical sounds in-human. The entire records drags in elements from "Contradictions Collapse", "Destroy Erase Improve", the "I" EP. Lethargica is the groove metal vein that was present all throughout "Nothing", but the gem of this record is "Pineal Gland Optics". It kicks off with a great snare downbeat feel and changes with each section so it remains one of the most enjoyable tracks on the record. Not to mention the one of the best solo offerings from Thordendal behind his parts on Internal Evidence, Cadeverous Mastication, Closed Eye Visuals, and Bleed. Once one finally understands "obZen", musically and lyrically, the impact of this record will hit very hard. One can relate this to the impact of their 2002 masterpiece, "Nothing".

Meshuggah raise the bar so high year after year, but inevitably limbo underneath it with the release of obZen. An essential addition for the newbie, but not as quintessential for the fan.
