Saul Stacey Williams (born February 29, 1972) is an American rapper, singer-songwriter, musician, slam poet, writer, and actor. He is known for his blend of poetry and alternative hip hop and for his lead roles in the 1998 independent film Slam and the 2013 jukebox musical Holler If Ya Hear Me, featuring Tupac Shakur's music. After releasing a string of EPs, he released the LP Amethyst Rock Star with producer Rick Rubin in 2001. In September 2004, he released his self-titled album to much acclaim. He played several shows supporting Nine Inch Nails on their European tour in summer 2005, and has also supported The Mars Volta. Williams was invited to the Lollapalooza music festival around that time, and the Chicago stage allowed Williams to attract a wider audience. He appeared on the Nine Inch Nails album Year Zero, and supported the group on their 2006 tour of North America.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you Saul Williams: actor, poet, Old Soul, artist, screenwriter, and leader of the oncoming prog-hop revolution. Catchy? Fresh off his role as a mental patient in K-Pax, Williams has called in Rick Rubin (producer of such indie luminaries as Slayer and System of a Down) and a small collection of session musicians to help retain that enormous amount of indie-cred he wears on his henna-stained sleeve. The problem is, I don't know of a place for Amethyst Rock Star. Your level of enjoyment depends on how much you invest in the lyrics and metaphors- Saul's observations come flying at breakneck speeds and require undivided attention, rendering the album unlistenable as background music. Of course, that's not much of a complaint. Regardless, the man has the confidence and originality that lasting careers are made of.

Exclusive Prime pricing. La La La's a real burner. Should scare your neighbors. Saul Williams may be a little spoken-wordy (see Tao of Now, though Esthero's vocals are very nice) but your mileage may vary what the hell?

It’s both a pleasure and an obstacle, this unrelenting lyricism of Saul Williams’; the reason why his is a great voice in hip-hop and the reason why his debut album is such difficult going. Every phrase on this record comes freighted with meaning, every track creaks under a novella’s worth of wordplay

Amethyst Rock Star is one of those rare transcendent albums. Regardless of your particular musical proclivities, regardless of any prejudice you may have against hip-hop or spoken word, the sheer artfulness of Williams' maiden offering will coax admiration out of even the most begrudging of listeners. Why is this" Short answer: it's pretty damn refreshing to hear somebody both smart and talented behind the mic. Shying away from clichés of both genres he straddles, Williams has a unique voice which he maintains throughout the album. It's not just a case of what Williams says however, but also how he says it. Every track on the album is chock-full of mind-bending imagery and turns of phrase which paint compelling, constantly shifting pictures in your mind. Indeed, every track requires multiple listens to grasp every allusion and intimation.
