John Tams is highly regarded in British folk circles, and rightly so. His work as a solo artist, member of Home Service, and the Albion Band has all been of the highest quality. These days his real focus is on his own work, and with The Reckoning he's released an absolute cracker of an album - albeit one that won't sit handily in any pigeonhole.

John Tams has some distinguished followers, from actors Bob Hoskins and Charles Dance to the singers Shirley Collins and Linda Thompson, and it's easy to see the attraction. His career has switched between inventive treatment of traditional music (he was a founder of both Home Service and the Albion Band) to theatrical work, and there's a fine sense of narrative and drama in his thoughtful, sensitive singing. The Reckoning, his third solo album, is his boldest yet, mixing traditional themes with new lyrics and subtle backing that includes electric guitar and brass.
