That same year, he made his conducting debut with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, replacing an unwell William Steinberg mid-concert and thereby coming into international recognition at the age of 24. He stayed with the Boston Symphony as an assistant conductor until 1974 and made several recordings with the orchestra for Deutsche Grammophon. From 1988 to 1995, Tilson Thomas was principal conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO), and recorded with them for such labels as Columbia (now Sony Classical), including the Symphony No 3 of Mahler. From 1995, he held the title of principal guest conductor with the LSO, and became conductor laureate in 2016.

About the Mastering Four engineers at Abbey Road Studios in London have remastered these historic EMI recordings from their original analogue sources for release in pristine hi-def. Between them, Simon Gibson, Ian Jones, Andy Walter and Allan Ramsay have many years of experience remastering archive recordings for EMI and other record labels. The process always starts with finding all of the records and tapes in EMI’s archive in London and comparing different sources and any previous CD reissues.

These were with the London Symphony Orchestra. The Schwarzkopf/Szell disc is usually seen combining The Four Last Songs with 12 other Orchestral Songs: The Radio Symphonie Orchester Berlin performs the Four Last Songs and five of the other orchestral songs, while the London Symphony is employed on the remaining works. Non temer, amato bene, . 05. Along with Callas, Schwarzkopf is the singer by whom I probably have the most recordings so I would be interested in how these recordings were initially released.

Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. Mozart: Lieder & Concert Arias. London Symphony Orchestra. Christian Adolf Overbeck. Christoph Christian Sturm. Christian Felix Weisse.

Richard Strauss provides the red thread in this film through some of the performers. In 1947, she signed an exclusive contract with EMI thanks to her agent who later became her husband, Walter Legge, the producer whose name is closely associated with the golden age of the record.
