Afro-Cuban jazz is the earliest form of Latin jazz. It mixes Afro-Cuban clave-based rhythms with jazz harmonies and techniques of improvisation. Afro-Cuban jazz emerged in the early 1940s with the Cuban musicians Mario Bauzá and Frank Grillo "Machito" in the band Machito and his Afro-Cubans in New York City.

For 13 years now, Maria Schneider and her Jazz Orchestra have played Thanksgiving week at the Jazz Standard in New York City, and, judging from the late set on Tuesday, they just keep getting better and better. I've been following Schneider closely since the mid-1990s, when she and the band played every Monday night at Visiones, a small, now-defunct club in Greenwich Village. On the album, and in other concerts I've seen, Robinson plays his solo on alto clarinet, but Tuesday night he unwound it on baritone saxophone, and it was as gorgeous as ever. Tickets for Schneider's concerts sell out quickly.

Jazz Latin Jazz/World Fusion Cuban Jazz. Beginning with "Peanut Vendor," the 1930 hit by Don Azpiazu & His Havana Casino Orchestra, Cuban music proved a sympathetic collaborator with American jazz. Of course, Jelly Roll Morton had made explicit the "Spanish tinge" in jazz years earlier. The first nearly equal fusion of jazz and Cuban players occurred in the mid-'40s, when Mario Bauza introduced bop wunderkind Dizzy Gillespie to Cuban master percussionist Chano Pozo.
