Selected Ambient Works Volume II. Лицензиар.

Selected Ambient Works Volume II is the second studio album by Aphex Twin, the pseudonym of British electronic musician Richard D. James. It was released by Warp in March 1994. Billed as a follow-up to James' debut, Selected Ambient Works 85–92, the album differs in sound by being largely beatless ambient music. James claimed that it was inspired by lucid dreaming, and likened the music to "standing in a power station on acid.

The same could be said for much of Aphex Twin’s debut album, Selected Ambient Works 85-92. It’s true that, even at its most intense, SAW 85-92 was gentler than his abrasive, reputation-making early singles like Digeridoo or Dodeccaheedron. But the pumping breakbeats and drum machines of tracks like Xtal and Pulsewidth were light-years from the interesting if ignorable air fresheners that Eno had originally proposed. But with 1994’s Selected Ambient Works Volume II, James made a clean break-with his own prior catalog, and with virtually everything else that was being trafficked in the genre. Then, as now, the first thing you become aware of with Selected Ambient Works Volume II is its purity, its starkness, its emptiness. There have been quieter records, more minimal records, more difficult records.

As an album, Selected Ambient Works Volume II persistently evades the sort of consensual understanding that is usually accorded full-length recordings of note. There is no remotely satisfying cocktail-banter pithy summary. For a largely instrumental album whose limited verbal material is more syllabic than textual, Aphex Twin’s Selected Ambient Works Volume II tells many stories. For one it is a tale of the populist flowering of British occultism, a rave-era echo of the Summer of Love. When in 1996 I interviewed Aphex Twin, who was then living in London, he described the Cornwall of his youth: It’s got a really sort of quite mystical sort of vibe to it: Lots of sort of folklore and folk tales and it’s full of stuff like that, and there’s lots of strange people, lots of sort of weird hermit.

Volume II differs significantly from the first volume in the series, in that it consists of lengthy, textured ambient compositions with minimal percussion and occasional vocal samples, in a vein similar to Brian Eno's ambient works. James described the album as being "like standing in a power station on acid" and went on to note that the sounds on recor. iscover more music, concerts, videos, and pictures with the largest catalogue online at Last.

Mr_Mole
I owned one, with the sticker and brown vinyl and sold it years ago. Bought from new.
Tenius
Does this version includes "Stone in Focus"? I do own the 1972 version though.
Ttyr
Repress! Repress! Repress! Repress! Repress! Repress! Repress! Repress! Repress! Repress! Repress! Repress!
Burking
No way I'm paying £100s for a tatty copy with surface noise or an american pressing mastered from CD with two tracks missing. This is the golden era of the vinyl reissue so I'm holding out for that magical announcement. Come on Warp you shits, give us a second pressing!
Vital Beast
R E P R E S SIt's been 25 years without an official Warp release of this on vinyl!
Yanki
Surely it's in the works. They'd be silly not to release a 4LP at some point with extras/bonus tracks from the SoundCloud tracks. They'd make a killing
Ndyardin
Came here to say this. Come on Warp get your finger out
Wishamac
Such a bummer that Stone In Focus isn't on this version. Whatever, at least I can spin it, sounds pretty good IMO.
Bradeya
My original U.K. 2cd has been bronzing for years now, and some of the tracks are unplayable now.
Fenrikasa
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compact_disc_bronzing The bronzing should not be progressive at this stage. The problem is PDO discs made in Blackburn Lancashire.
Runemane
American edition is with out track "Hankie". Dissapointing situation. American people can't listen scaring music? Why...
Corgustari
With almost 3 hours of music to account for you'd think warp would have used 4 lps instead of trying to get >26 minutes of music per lp side
Connorise
It's almost up to 30 mins a side, the problem with making it a quad LP would be the track divisions, I don't think it would really work on eight sides.
Gela
i think we should remove this. we dont even have confirmation this exists, and all of the sellers are selling it as the normal brown vinyl in greyscale.
Golkis
It definitely exists. I have a copy. Brown vinyl with the coloured album cover
Snake Rocking
I have a copy on brown vinyl that's in the standard colour sleeve. No numbered sticker though and I'm not the original owner so it's possible there has been a switch at some point.
Whitesmasher
Just want to throw in my opinion that this pressing sounds pretty good, even though it comes from a digital source and omits two tracks
Eseve
According to lore Richard made the tracks in lucid dreams. That's when you're in a dream and suddenly realize it's a dream and take control of it. He'd go into his home studio (or the dream's version of it) and make songs. Then when he woke up he'd go into the real home studio and do his best to recreate them (while still bleary eyed from having just woken up).
Acrobat
Allegedly pressed in a quantity of 1000 copies, from what I've heard.
Vozuru
Does anyone know why the colors of the rims/lines on the labels don't match the colors on the back cover/inside gatefold? There seem to be two sets of red instead of a set of red and a set of orange.
GODMAX
Difference between this and the other brown vinyl version of this album?
Unde
Labels are in color, instead of the black and white labels of the other brown vinyl editions.
Swift Summer
I've had a copy of this since it first showed up in the UK and honestly, I'm torn on it..for one, yes it's great to have this album on vinyl without dropping hundreds of punds on one but sides A/B sound like they've been cut with a sandpaper stylus. A/B make me cringe with how terrible the quality is but C/D and E/F sound absoloutly fine, infact they sound warm and lushaontop of being clear and crisp. this record is a big risk as some copies sound like shit and some are completely lovely..cant warp just do a good reissue of this already?
Hbr
Which track on this record is "Stone in Focus"? Or is it not on this LP?
black coffe
Are you sure it's on the CD? It's not on the original UK 2xCD release as it's too long to fit on the CD.
Vizuru
Not on this LP. Only found on original 1994 press or CD.
Shan
Even though Warp already called 1972's repress out as "not authorized by them" (though still licensed by Sire/Warner), it feels like they do not wish to repress this. Either that or RDJ simply won't allow, he's making his own plans to re-release his back catalog in "chrome or metal tapes". Still I remain hopeful that an official reissue.
Voodoogore
Yes, some very interesting comments on his webstore - "Thinking about this now I'd love to try and get Warp to do high quality chrome cassette versions of all my Warp musics, maybe even metal ones if possible. If I wait a year or so for this I could include all the extras on the cassettes as there would be plenty of room, would have to sign the tracks over to Warp first for a physical release, something I don't have to do for this website but that shouldn't be too difficult." I would buy a cassette deck, just for this. Either way, I'd be surprised if there wasn't a vinyl release at the same time. We can but hope!
Sarin
I've had no issues with the 1972 pressing at all. There's not much in the way of background noise, and sounds crisp through the Technics system it's being played through. The only one issue there was is side C's label being applied as quite literally a slap-dash job, but that's about it.
Thohelm
as noted on other WARP releases, they are VERY prone to disc rot....back that shit up before it's too late
Frlas
Sadly a lot of PDO releases are not that great in quality. Identifiable by ''bronzing'' - just to make it more interesting, PDO also added a bronze dye to some CD's just to make them look different, so it's hard to tell if your CD is actually dying or if it's because of the coloured dye.
Globus
Where is this on Bleep?? I don't see it. Weird.
Thordigda
Its not on bleep its here on his own store run by bleep/warp :https://aphextwin.warp.net/release/68148-aphex-twin-selected-ambient-works-volume-ii
Tuliancel
Yes, which is essentially linked through Warp.net and not available by going to Aphex's page on Bleep. The tracks will NOT be displayed for purchase, if go directly to Bleep and look for the extra tracks.
Onath
its on his website with details on some of the tracks
in waiting
You mean its on the Warp's page for Aphex. Not available through Bleep, but direct through the Warp site. Weird. Thanks!
bass
It's on the Aphex Twin Bleep page.https://aphextwin.warp.net10 more words please.
Zeueli
Be aware: this version might not have "Stone In Focus", which is one of the best tracks on this album. Mine does not have it.
Fato
i thought the american one didn't come with hankie not sure?
Nern
It doesn't have Hankie either, which pretty much reflects the original US CD release by Sire.
fire dancer
The time seems off on this pressing. It's too fast.
Braendo
All I've got to say is....there's a reason why the original press sells for over $100.Surface noise literally from start to end. Best track (by FAR) on the album completely omitted from the repress. Flimsy packaging. The list goes on and on.1972 pressings belong at charity shops beside musty herb alpert and barbara streisand albums.
Kison
I have the '94 release, brown, numbered (NM) and it's probably the shittiest sounding press in my collection (~1500). What a total disservice to the actual music.
Fiarynara
Well the original pressing is shit too so there's that. At least it's complete.
Makaitist
I found the following comment on the Warp Facebook page regarding this release. Clearly it's not a bootleg or unlicensed, it's just licensed for US & Canada:'I work for Revolver USA, the distributor for the LP reissue - to be clear, the label only has the rights for the USA and Canada. And to be equally clear, this title is not a bootleg or a fake'.
Lahorns Gods
Rich says there aren't any plans for vinyl, but Track 19 aka Stone In Focus has been uploaded to the digital store!
Uthergo
Come on Warp, give us a repress and make us very happy.
TheJonnyTest
Brilliant album (obviously) but in regards to pressing quality it is not as bad as people make it out to be but it's not exactly good either. The sound is clean BUT some detail is lost and the midrange is way to high which means you can only play it at a modest volume that said if you have a decent equaliser you can sort this out. It's nice to have it on vinyl so buy it if you want it, it's not awful, however for clarity I'd go for the CD plus it's easier to relax to a CD isn't it? I guess some people feel cheated because it has been said the vinyl was pressed from CD although there is no actual proof to back that up.
Qwert
How does this compare to the 2012 1972 reissue? Is is exactly the same or is the pressing better?
Gugrel
Haha yes it's easier to relax to a CD. :) You put into words what I've been feeling for some time. Thanks !
Androlhala
Still no Stone In Focus, so it's the same CD rip then?
Beanisend
Even taking in to consideration the missing "stone in focus" and "hankie", this is still a great addition to your collection. This is not unofficial as tagged but fully licensed from Sire records who have distribution rights in the US. No issues with sound quality on my copy.
Jozrone
A/B'd this with my CD copy and it sounds fine. Not going to say it sounds better, but... there's nothing obviously wrong. I'm gonna guess the people complaining either got bad pressings, or they forgot how much distortion and high end rolloff there is in the original material.
Defolosk
Just went to try to re-listen to this 1972 re-issue and after 4 minutes I took it off again and nearly threw it in the bin, that is how bad it sounds. I hate CD's but I am going to get the cd because this pressing is worthless. Don't waste your money, Warp will hopefully repress this soon. The 1972 version is terrible.
Winail
I can confirm, quality here is poor. Was given to me as a gift so i can't complain too much ;)
Thordira
these guys have done two rounds of represses because warp couldn't be bothered
Swordsong
Yep time for a repress, they would sell plenty irrespective of the outlay. Autechre have done the early represses so Apex time now!
Gardagar
1972 represses are known to be poo-poo. Not gonna buy this, as much as I would want to.
Nto
mine sounds great (more words more words more words more)
Abandoned Electrical
Why is this repress not being handled by WARP? Not much trust in 1972 represses...
Rivik
Anyone have feedback on what 'this' new reissue sounds like?
Chankane
Yeah it wasn't great, I was taken in by the hype but I sent it back due to the lack of legitimacy. It's a cheap knock off with a high price tag.
Pringles
If I were to guess, it's pretty much a repress of the existing one, with the same plates, missing tracks and all.
Yayrel
This was actually repressed just under a month ago 15/02/2017 Mixmag only advertised the fact yesterday 07/03/2017 if you hurry you may be lucky, only a few copies left, good luck!
anneli
Come on Warp Records, do a repress of this please.
Mr_Jeйson
This is a bootleg according to Warp: "SAW II = definitely fake/bootlegs... not licensed or released by Warp..."https://www.facebook.com/warprecords/posts/141481355970497
Dibei
So is the '94 ltd. brown pressing... Have not had a chance to hear the black
Whitemaster
Well if that is true were did they get the masters from? because to most people me included the 1972 pressing is absolutely worthless because of the terrible sound quality.
Faebei
As read just below WARP's comment:"Paul Ashby: I work for Revolver USA, the distributor for the LP reissue - to be clear, the label only has the rights for the USA and Canada. And to be equally clear, this title is not a bootleg or a fake. The following are the credits from the vinyl package:"All songs written by RIchard D. James © Chrysalis Songs (BMI). All rights administered by BMG Rights Management (US) LLC. © 1994 & 2012 Sire Records Company. Produced under license from Sire Records Company. Manufactured by Rhino Entertainment Company, a Warner Music Group Company. All Rights Reserved. Made in the U.S.A. Marketed by International Feel LLC. 1972 PO Box 11444 Oakland California 94611 USA"
BlackBerry
Why don't they do a repress of it then? It was released more than four years ago, I wonder if it's similar to when Plain pressed Loveless and it was technically a reissue in the states but in Europe it was considered a bootleg. Either way they are missing out on not doing a proper repress of it.
Liarienen
Just bought a copy of this for a fiver lol
Dordred
Found a copy for £10 so snapped it up. Following week I found a copy of it on brown vinyl for £20, so snapped that up too!
Arar
:) Thats great, its a nice when things just work out like that !
AfinaS
Even if some of the pressings sound fine, doesn't change the fact it's missing two tracks ("Hankie", which is not present on Sire CD, and "Stone in Focus", original vinyl/cassette exclusive), so either way you'll get an inferior version of the album.
Maveri
Stone in Focus being the best track on the album, IMO.
Hucama
This album will haunt the deepest, darkest hidden parts of your mind!! One of my most listened to albums. A truly astonishing piece of work. 10/10 Masterpiece!
inetserfer
I have had ZERO issues with the 1972 pressingsounds great & looks greatmuch love fromMICHIGAN
Sagda
Trying to found out the different track timings between each CD pressing is a mess. For example, the last track on Disc 1, is timed at 2:38 on many pressings here, it's 2:40 on my 2xCD UK repress, and on two FLAC rips I found online, both verified with Accuraterip, it's 2:44.So either someone is putting out incorrect timings, or Warp has issues with consistency between the masters of each disc pressing they have.
Usanner
Bad pressing. Some but not all of the tracks (maybe a handful or so) have clicks and pops in them and the records themselves are visibly defective and wobbly in places which can be seen when they're in motion. Shame they didn't do a better job of quality control with such a timeless classic. How do you mess up 180g vinyl?!
Blackseeker
I agree with the minority here--my copy sounds fantastic. I'm not sure if it was a quality control issue or what.
Arlelond
Nearly impossible to listen to sides A-C, crackly, raspy junk. I tried to wash it, no change. Don't buy it.
Lli
I'm hoping for a genuine repress too. Maybe for RSD or so, i'd love it if they made a black and also a brown-pressing on the side. I'd pay for it, but 54,95€ for the 1972-repress is astonishingly high noting it's low quality. So, Warp; repress this and Drukqs and we're set.
Kerdana
Otherworldly music, absolutely unique, as close to how lucid dreams would sound like. Every track is a masterpiece. E2 is the highlight of the album and it's a shame it was excluded from the CD version , which is the ideal format. The black vinyl edition sounds great but this double cassette version is a better option to enjoy the album without intrusive noise .
Duzshura
Praying that one day Warp represses this beauty, hopefully from either the master DAT or the master stampers. A 3xCD release with (Stone In Focus) would be great too.
Blackbrand
Lots of negative reviews here. Personally, I haven't had any problems - sounds great through headphones and on my setup. Technics 1200 MK2 and a higher-end Onkyo.
Aurizar
Me either!!! Im lost for words...clear, warm, no vinyl defects...do i own the same record as everyone else??? All i can suggest is that everyone go out and buy Luxman gear...cause this vinyl is perfect....
SlingFire
I'm playing this on my cheapie little Crosley turntable and it sounds great! Very minor noise, but that could be my needle. I like it and couldn't pass it up for $32 sealed at a local record store. Cheers!
Ueledavi
Whoops did I stumble on some reddit circle jerk "great shimmering beast", I guess I care because you can fake it. Likely my least fave of all his output including power pill. It's pronounced tall if you feel like attempting shame.

Terrible quality pressing from me too. Visual blotches, crackles and overall bad quality sound. the version on Apple Music sounds better.
Whiteseeker
Yep the 1972 re-issue sounds like a 96kbps (at best) crackly, scratchy flat piece of shit.Absolute waste of money.

I asked the author of the 33 1/3 book if he found out why only the original vinyl and cassette pressings of this album featured track 19 (commonly known as "[stone in focus]") -- especially in this digital age where it could have been released online. It's because Warp wanted to keep the original release special. This album is a masterwork. Don't bother with the 2012 reissue vinyl on 1972; it's mastered from the quite lacking US CD.
Lonesome Orange Kid
Welp, the originals aren't very special anymore. The version of this you can get on Aphex's new online store do indeed have Stone in Focus.

There's those rare albums that morph into a lifestyle or at least a life altering event. Then there's this album. A vacuum into something so rare, only those 'indoctrinated' by its sounds can understand. Truly beyond description, this album is an eternal shimmering beast.
