The Gladiators are a Jamaican roots reggae band, most popular during the 1970s. The core was Albert Griffiths (guitarist and singer), Clinton Fearon (bassist and singer) and Gallimore Sutherland rhythm guitar and singer. The two most famous albums are Trenchtown Mix Up (1976) and Proverbial Reggae (1978) with songs as "Hearsay", "Jah Works", "Dreadlocks the Time is Now". Mix Up", "Music Makers from Jamaica", and "Soul Rebel" – a song written by The Wailers.

Nero & the Gladiators were a British instrumental rock and roll band in the early 1960s. The group was led by keyboard player Mike O'Neill as "Nero", and had two minor hits in the UK, "Entry of the Gladiators" and "In the Hall of the Mountain King". O'Neill (8 July 1938 – 10 October 2013) was born in Lowton, Lancashire, and moved to London in 1958. He played in Vince Taylor's band before joining The Cabin Boys, who backed singer Colin Hicks, the younger brother of Tommy Steele

Name: The Gladiators. Profile For over three decades, Albert Griffiths and his Gladiators have been a major force within Jamaican music. Born in 1946, in St. Elizabeth parish, he grew up in poverty in Trench Town, and trained as a mason. Thus it was back to masonry, where Griffiths was now working alongside the Ethiopians' Leonard Dillon under a foreman, Leebert Robinson, also looking to enter the music industry.

The first single they recorded for Studio One was Hello Carol (with lead vocal by Nicky Thomas), which topped the Jamaican chart in late 1968. In 1976, The Gladiators inked a deal with Virgin Records and began to work on their breakthrough debut album with producer Prince Tony Robinson. And to top it off this release also includes various dubs, extended mixes (many of which are previously unreleased), and Serious Thing, which is taken from the master tapes.

It was the first Gladiators album on which no member of the group played any of the instruments, as a few members of the band Aswad were brought in. The album did worse than their previous work, and they were subsequently dropped from their contract with Virgin At the time, roots reggae was declining.
