A pair from Long Island, EPMD weren't real-life hardcore rappers - it's hard to believe the same voice who talks of spraying a crowd on one track could be name-checking the Hardy Boys later on - but their no-nonsense, monotoned delivery brooked no arguments. With their album debut, Strictly Business, Erick Sermon and Parrish Smith really turned rapping on its head; instead of simple lyrics delivered with a hyped, theatrical tone, they dropped the dopest rhymes as though they spoke them all the time.

Strictly Business may be just that, but that business is making fun, relatable party music and that they do as well as any hip hop group since. Even a cursory glance at the track list would be enough to raise many eyebrows as one title does seem to stand out from the crowd, and that track is ‘The Steve Martin. It’s a fitting close to the album as it puts perfectly into context the contrast between groups like EPMD and the other groups of the time: Public Enemy would never be caught discussing such a non-egalitarian topic, while NWA would have laughed at the duo’s unwillingness to put six bullets in Jane’s head (hell Ice Cube has all but.

Strictly Business’ may be EPMD’s debut album, but it left calling cards for their future work – and influenced numerous MCs that followed it. Published on. June 7, 2019. Business? Not cool, is it? Stiffs in suits and ties grafting at a desk and thinking only of profit? Where’s the fun in that? EPMD found it. And let’s be clear – these guys were serious about profit. That’s why they were called Erick And Parrish Making Dollars. Their debut album, Strictly Business, did it for them; they made plenty of Benjamins. And the rest of us? We had a party from hearing them do it. Listen to Strictly Business right now. Erick Sermon and Parrish Smith emerged in the mid-80s.
