We Are the Romans is the second and final studio album by American metalcore band Botch. A Hydra Head repressing of the vinyl was released on October 25, 2011.

Prince told us to party like it is 1999. In 1999 in Tacoma, Washington the four members of Botch created an album that is considered one of the best within its genre entitled, We Are The Romans. A title that is a statement about the United States thought of immortality, but a realization that we are not. The album cover shows what appears to be New York City with a huge blot of black ink covering the city. Within the blot is a red target, signifying that the United States is indeed a target. The even more disturbing aspect of the art is the fact that when you first open the contents, there is a picture of destroyed buildings

This pressing was hand assembled at our office and we were usually pretty careful in terms of looking through the pressings and catching the special stuff. That said it COULD be that there were a few more. Other Versions (5 of 17) View All.

We Are The Romans is my first Botch album, and I will definitely have to pick up more from one of the defining Hydrahead bands. Too bad they have only one other full-length (American Nervoso) and a criminally short EP (Anthology Of Dead Ends) bookending this, 'cause judging from the sound of this album Botch deserved far, far more press and acclaim than they got in their short lifespan. I'm not quite sure how to define this Seattle outfit's sound.

We Are the Romans is the second and final studio album by American metalcore band Botch. Thomas Howell as the ‘Soul Man’ has been described by the band as satirizing Racetraitor and other bands with these very lofty political ideals that seemed like more a marketing tool for the genre of political hardcore rather than a sincere agenda (Brian Cook). We Are the Romans Q&A.

The making of Botch’s We Are the Romans. – 1999 was a transitional year for both underground music and America’s most iconic freestanding structures. Seattle’s Space Needle was no longer the world’s tallest metaphor for heroin abuse, and Tacoma/Seattle quartet Botch were about to redefine a genre with the hyperkinetic guitar squalls and contortionist rhythms of We Are the Romans. On the other side of the country, the Twin Towers were two years away from being annihilated in a terrorist firestorm, but Botch guitarist Dave Knudson had already drawn a target.

I will never forget my immediate reaction when HydraHead announced the deluxe CD reissue back in 2007 with the words"Unless you've been living under a rock that's underneath another even bigger rock in a cave in the middle of nowhere, you probably already know what's up with this milestone/motherfucker of an album."I felt deeply ashamed and ordered it from their webstore. One listening session was enough to realize that Botch have done for hardcore what Minutemen did for punk rock by pushing its limits and finding a singular and inimitable musical identity, encouraging and inspiring countless other bands.I have listened to the double LP for the first time tonight after spending so many years with the CD. The soundwork is breathtaking, Matt Bayles' recording in combination with James Plotkin's remaster for vinyl make the LP version "bigger, better, and more Roman than ever. So man the goddamn ramparts already, 'cause it's time to burn this motherfucker down." (HydraHead)

I own one of these as well. Friends of the label and band. Didn't realize how limited it was at the time.

How is there no actual review of this album? A touchstone of post-hardcore/math-rock/math-metal whatever. It's unclassifiable because it's totally original. This is a classic example -- in retrospect -- of a band's first record hinting at what was to come and then hitting their stride. I read somewhere that the guitar work has no palm-muting on the whole album. These guys were basically the Fugazi of '90s metal-hardcore: rhythm-section driven and insane guitar noise but with a singer stuck on "pissed." So very essential.

Note, there are four colors for this repress: Black, Clear Blue Splatter, Baby Blue and Clear. No indication of pressing numbers for each has been released as far as I can tell.

There was one first pressing on marbled green vinyl. Aaron turner told me himself at the HH yard sale.

There were some one-offs pressed during the initial run. Aaron sold the Green Marble (disc A/B only) on Saturday May 25th, 2013 during the, 'Hydra Head Super-Power-Yard-Sale™' - HHR had been in the red and announced that the LA HQ was not financially solvent; they were essentially forced to liquidate assets to pay off debts. Back to WAtR, I don't know how many one-offs were pressed, but, I was incredibly lucky to pick up one of these directly from said dude. I have, 'Swirly Green,' which I've just been to lazy to add. I will get to it if anyone wants to see it. http://hydraheadlines.blogspot.com/2013/05/hhr-la-hq-blow-out-yard-sale.html

The "Army Green" original press maybe?

1st press also comes on color vinyl (Blue / Orange), I don't know the pressing figures but I own one.
