He won the Pulitzer Prize for composition in 2000 and hasn't slowed down at all; the first two works on the album date from his seventh decade, after the prize, and the title piece, composed in 1987, has continued to receive performances.

Alban Berg composed his Three Pieces for Orchestra (German – Drei Orchesterstücke), Op. 6, between 1913 and 1915. They are dedicated "to my teacher and friend Arnold Schoenberg in immeasurable gratitude and love". The three pieces are: Präludium (Prelude). An instrumentally colourful, impressionistic prelude.
