In 1960, he moved to Chicago, Illinois, where he adopted the stage name Lonnie Brooks (Luther Johnson was already using the name Guitar Junior there). Brooks found regular work in clubs on the West Side of Chicago, in nearby Gary and East Chicago, Indiana, and occasionally in the Rush Street entertainment area on Chicago's North Side. He recorded numerous singles for various labels, including Chess, Chirrup, Mercury, Midas and USA Records, receiving some local radio airplay. He also supported other artists on record and in live performances, including Jimmy Reed. Brooks signed a contract with the label, which released his album Bayou Lightning the following year. The album won the Grand Prix du Disque Award from the 1980 Montreux Jazz Festival.

One of Lonnie Brooks' more consistent albums, "Bayou Lightning" is a good 40 minutes of chugging Louisiana grooves Brooks should have cut it short at three minutes instead of letting it clock in at almost five. But those first three minutes are top-notch, and songs like the slow blues ballad "In The Dark", the swinging "Watchdog" and the grinding album closer "You Know What My Body Needs" are equally fine
Listen free to Lonnie Brooks – Bayou Lightning (Voodoo Daddy, Figure Head and more). All the promise that Lonnie Brooks possessed was realized on this album, his finest and most consistent to date. The churning bayou groove of "Voodoo Daddy," and a soul-steeped "Watch What You Got," a bone-chilling remake of Junior Parker's "In the Dark," rollicking covers of Tommy Tucker's "Alimony" and Brooks' own "Figure Head," and the swaggering originals "You Know What My Body Needs" and "Watchdog" are.
