Golden Brown" is a song by the English rock band the Stranglers. It was released as a 7" single in December 1981 in the United States and in January 1982 in the United Kingdom, on Liberty. It was the second single released from the band's sixth album La folie. It peaked at No. 2 in the UK Singles Chart, the band's highest ever placing in that chart. In January 2014, NME ranked the song as No. 488 on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. It has also been recorded by many other artists.

Golden Brown Lyrics: Golden brown, texture like sun, Lays me down, with my mind she runs, Throughout the night, no need to fight, Never a frown with golden brown, Every time, just like the last. Produced by Steve Churchyard. Golden brown, texture like sun Lays me down, with my mind she runs Throughout the night, no need to fight Never a frown with golden brown. Every time, just like the last On her ship tied to the mast To distant lands, takes both my hands Never a frown with golden brown. Thanks to being chosen as BBC Radio 2’s record of the week, Golden Brown peaked at a chart high for The Stranglers, behind Town Called Malice by The Jam. Today, it is probably the band’s most famous song. Can you waltz to it? Not easily!

Approximate score of "Golden Brown" by The Stranglers. I used the harpsichord score by Gio Reynolds (with a few corrections) and picked up the rest by myself, checking across various sources. The song is in E flat minor (with the intro, bridges and coda in B flat minor), although the album version seems sharp by 25 cents. Covers have been recorded in all sorts of keys, for example by Nouvelle Vague, in A minor and E minor, and by a mariachi band (with Hugh Cornwell singing), in D minor and A minor.

The Stranglers - "Golden Brown" (Dec '81, Liberty), is a track (first released on 7", then on the "La Folie" album, the same month), with much controversy surrounding it's lyrics. The Stranglers Song By Song" (Hugh Cornwell's book), states: "'Golden Brown' works on two levels - It's about heroin & also about a girl". Essentially, the lyrics describe how "both provided me with pleasurable times.

GOLDEN BROWN " Golden brown texture like sun Lays me down WITH my mind she runs Throughout the night No need to fight Never a frown with golden brown. Every time just like the last On her ship tied to the mast To distant lands Takes both my hands Never a frown with golden brown. Golden brown finer temptress Through the ages she's heading west From far away Stays for a day Never a frown with golden brown. Never a frown With golden brown Never a frown With golden brown ". next.

Golden brown finer temptress Through the ages she's heading west. The Opium trade began thousands of years ago in modern day Iran, Irag, Turkey, and Syria. Then in 1300 BC Eygpt became the biggest exporters of Opium under Tutankhamen, with it eventually making its' way to Europe. Raw opium is yellow, amber colour, and could indeed be described as "Golden Brown". The video for the song features images of Egypt, and could therefore be directly referencing the role that country had in getting the Opium to Europe. Kaz from Chicago Heights, IlAlso love this song.

Notes

The official fan club magazine STRANGLED stated the following in its issue 32 (April 1991):

"On March 25th Epic re-released "Golden Brown". This was against the wishes of the band, so much so they refused an invitation to appear on 'Wogan'. The B-side, 'You', was a track recorded on the 'Aural Sculpture' sessions and hasn't been released before."
