Giulio Rovighi, Aldo Campagnari, Massimo Piva (viola), Francesco Dillon (cello). with harmonics as a constant defining factor, the music's atmosphere, as the Quartetto Promoteo's first-rate performance shows, is forever haunting. Performed by Quartetto Prometeo, they are new arrangements for string quartet of three Contrapunctus (I, IV and V) from Bach’s The Art of Fugue, plus a group of popular Mexican songs and four Spanish guitar pieces by Tarrega, Llobet, Aguado and Sor, brought into a compelling unity. What is intriguing about these arrangements is that they are indeed ‘Re-inventions’ as Stefano manages to impinge his own personal style of writing, in harmonics, so that they are unmistakably the work of his hand (Irvine Arditti in the liner notes).

Stefano Scodanibbio (1956-2012) was a musician active on many fronts. As an innovative virtuoso bassist and a pioneer of extended technique for his instrument he collaborated with composers including Luigi Nono, Iannis Xenakis, John Cage, Brian Ferneyhough and Terry Riley, inspiring each of them to new works. musicians Quartetto Prometeo: Giulio Rovighi - violin Aldo Campagnari - violin Massimo Piva - viola Francesco Dillon - violoncello. Quartetto Prometeo (ECM). As a double bass player, Scodanibbio perhaps yearned for higher frequencies; much of this writing for string quartet is based on harmonics so that the music appears to float out of the stratosphere. What comes across is the composer's intense love for his material, which alternates between haunting Mexican folk songs (including the bewitching Bésame mucho), pieces originally for guitar, and dislocations of three of Bach's Art of Fugue. Totally original sounds, wonderfully realised by Quartetto Prometeo.
